    Hello Tiny Buddha!

So this is my first post and the question I have for you is how should I know when I’m being too intrusive with my personal relationships? I am very much a caregiver who wants to make everybody happy, and while I realize that isn’t possible I find myself giving advice and talking to people a lot. Some appreciate it and some do not. I recently ran into this problem with my roommate. She was feeling down after having a one night stand with a guy, but I had not heard about this from her. One of my other friends told me about her being sad and me being the Mama Bear I am thought “Poor baby! I’ll try and help her feel better!” Even though she had not told me about the one night stand herself I thought it would be ok to talk to her since she has come to me in the past about personal struggles, but she took it as me butting in and trying to tell her how to live her life. I have since apologized and know I made a mistake, but I want to know how can I try and recognize when I’m crossing a line in the future?

I think its best you allow others to talk about whats bothering them instead of advising them all over – i realize the idea of giving advice to people is a form of caring but would you like it if something bad happened to you and someone kept giving you suggestions when you were healing – sometimes a simple, are you ok? lets talk when you’re ready is more than enough. In this case, you could have waited for your room-mate to approach you instead when she was emotionally ready and tried to support her in indirect ways, maybe do something nice for her, a very simple gesture or just hang out with her – sometimes talking isnt what people need, they need time and some laughter to be ready to gain perspective and acceptance of what happened.
