Past situation: After graduation (05′), I attempted to go to a community college. I come from a low-income family and never had much support from my family, as dad worked two jobs and mother is sick. I ended up dropping out due to failure of math and financial reasons. Spent years from high school to mid-twenties working low paying jobs at warehouses and fast food. Even babysat towards the end. I was extremely unhappy at those jobs and kind of young and lost with my life.

Fast forward to now: I am now 30 yrs young and met the love of life almost four years ago. When I met her, everything changed for me. I got the support and encouragement that I needed to attempt to go back to school. I am now in my last semester of community college and will receive my associates degree this spring. My main focus is on Anthropology, as I have discovered it is something I have a high interest in. I want to transfer out of state by next spring and want to get a job in the mean time to save up so that my partner and I can move when the time comes. My goal is to get a bachelor’s degree and I have no idea what I am going to do with it. A perk of majoring in Anthropology is that, well, I could do almost anything with it since it is a broad study. I know I do not like working in fast food, retail and I do not want to work in the corporate world. I am the type that would rather work alone or with a small group of people. I just have no idea what I should do. What am I doing with my life? Where am I suppose to go? I want to help people, I love nature… I mean I’m 30 years old, I should have a career by now ya know? Internet searches are getting tiresome as I can’t find anything that inspires me. It is like I’m looking for a job that is not well known, or not mainstream if that makes any sense.

Basically, I’m just asking for any advice that could point me in the right direction.

    Thank you in advance 🙂

    Dear Jenna:

An Associate or Bachelor Degree is a perquisite to many jobs, regardless of the major. Often the nature of one’s job has nothing to do with the Major, but the degree itself made the job possible. You like to work independently or in a small group of people, not in the corporate world; you like to help people and you like Anthropology. I wonder what in Anthropology attracts you the most ?

None profit organizations come to mind, such that promote the welfare of certain disadvantaged groups of people, perhaps.

    Anita-

The thing that I find fascinating about Anthropology is learning about other cultures and how everything is connected on so many levels.  I appreciate your suggestion on non-profit work. I have thought about it and it’s something that I may look more into.

    Dear Jenna:

In the world we live in, in the US, Europe, Canada, Australia, at the least, in every city, there are multiple cultures living in a small area. And then there is the diluting of cultures because of mass social media. What a fascinating topic and reality. “Culture and Mass Media” – wouldn’t that be an excellent PhD topic…?

A non-profit organization that has something to do with the topic would be fascinating work, wouldn’t it…
