It’s oversimplified to say ‘Happiness is a choice.’ Some people are struggling with depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other conditions that make it challenging to find peace and joy. But ‘challenging’ doesn’t mean impossible. It’s more accurate to say, ‘Happiness takes lots of choices that are sometimes hard to make.’ Like: the choice to accept ourselves and our struggles, the choice to take responsibility for getting help, and the choice to do the things that are good for us, even when—especially when—we feel like giving up.

If you know someone who’s depressed, please resolve never to ask them why. Depression isn’t a straightforward response to a bad situation; depression just is, like the weather. Try to understand the blackness, lethargy, hopelessness, and loneliness they’re going through. Be there for them when they come through the other side. It’s hard to be a friend to someone who’s depressed, but it is one of the kindest, noblest, and best things you will ever do.

One of the most courageous decisions you’ll ever make is to finally let go of what is hurting your heart and soul.

When life is sweet, say thank you and celebrate. When life is bitter, say thank you and grow.

Your emotions are meant to fluctuate, just like your blood pressure is meant to fluctuate. It’s a system that’s supposed to move back and forth, between happy and unhappy. That’s how the system guides you through the world.

Grief is like the ocean; it comes on waves ebbing and flowing. Sometimes the water is calm, and sometimes it is overwhelming. All we can do is learn to swim.

Today’s a good day to start walking in the opposite direction of anything or anyone that causes you more sorrow than joy.

Don’t let the darkness from your past block the light of joy in your present. What happened is done. Stop giving time to things which no longer exist, when there is so much joy to be found here and now.

Cry. Forgive. Learn. Move on. Let your tears water the seeds of your future happiness.

I’m stronger because of the hard times, wiser because of my mistakes, and happier because I have known sadness.

Everybody wants happiness, nobody wants pain, but you can’t have a rainbow without a little rain.

The more you hide your feelings, the more they show. The more you deny your feelings, the more they grow.

Don’t let past relationships ruin your future happiness. Scars remind us of where we’ve been, not where we are going.

Tough times never last, but tough people do.

I follow four dictates: face it, accept it, deal with it, then let it go.

Never fear shadows. They simply mean there’s a light shining somewhere nearby.

When something bad happens you have three choices. You can let it define you, let it destroy you, or you can let it strengthen you.

Look at what you’ve got and make the best of it. It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.

The primary cause of unhappiness is never the situation but thought about it. Be aware of the thoughts you are thinking.

Don’t promise when you are happy, don’t reply when you are angry, and don’t decide when you are sad.
