This means, he really didn’t want to contact you, not his initiative, it was the shrink’s idea and it also means that both he and his shrink believe that the relationship with you was not healthy for him or that getting back together will NOT be healthy for him. The shrink did not suggest getting back together or even looking into it.

Would you like to help him with closure? For that reason alone, if I was able to handle it, I would contact him, with the thought of helping him. If I chose to help him out that way, I would meet him and his shrink IN the shrink’s office and only for the duration of the session, no alone time with the ex before or after.
