    Dear Anastasia:

Sometimes it is wise to just give up. Maybe this is one of those times. Maybe, if you stop trying to go back to sleep, once you wake up early, it can help you feel better even if you do not solve the sleeping problem.. just allow yourself to wake up early and don’t pressure yourself to go back to sleep, don’t pressure yourself at all, one way or another. Did you already give it a try, to …. not try?

That is basically what my boyfriend suggested the other day. I will see if that works for me!

    Dear Anastasia:

Notice that my suggestion was not to not try going back to sleep and see if you do, but truly give up on trying to go back to sleep, to be okay with not. To be okay with sleeping as long as you happen to sleep, to relax into the reality of you not sleeping as much as you want and not expecting it to change.

    Dear Anastasia,

    Sorry for the late reply.

Since I had suggested to you this method and you tried that out, I will respond to you even though it is late.

“I tried counting backwards but it didn’t work. In the back of my mind I knew that I would have to get up eventually and that made sleeping impossible for some reason.”

That which is happening in the back of the mind is the over activity of the subconscious mind. The only way that I know of to “cancel out” the subconscious thoughts is by making a series of conscious thoughts. And that is exactly what happens when the reverse counting is done. It is a perfectly autonomous process in such a way that it is not fully conscious and not fully subconscious and hence requires both of these thinking patterns in order to do the counting. It behaves like the “noise cancellation” headphones which cuts out the outside ambient noise.

I read in your post that you tried the counting and it did not work for you. But I did not see anywhere that at which of the 4 steps you had a problem or did not see how many times you reached the figure of 1 starting from 100. You did not fall asleep so I am keeping option 4 aside.

The rest of the options are designed in such a way that they end up with something for you to do till you reach option 4 (which is to fall off asleep).

    Option i. ends with…
“..then start with that number else begin from 100”

    Option ii. ends with…
“..then start with that number else begin from 100”

    Option iii. ends with…
“..If so, Repeat the exercise again.”

And also how many times did you try to reach to any of the above options?

You need not answer any of the above questions, but just like any other practice this too requires a certain amount of continuity, repetitiveness and of course diligence.

I see your last post that you are going to try out something. So I am glad that you are able to find peace with your situation in some way or the other.

    Take care.

    Best wishes,

    VJ

    Hello!

Last night I had trouble falling asleep this time. Ugh. I fell asleep eventually though and don’t feel as tired as I could feel, but I wish it hadn’t happened.

I did count backwards from 100 and said to myself “I’m going to do great” over and over again, which seemed to help me relax, but I had to cave and take a melatonin. I hate having to rely on melatonin to fall asleep during the week, sigh.

When I was just counting I found that I would relax then find my mind wandering slightly and stressing out about not sleeping.

    Dear Anastasia:

Keep experimenting with different possible solutions, including, perhaps the one I suggested. Looking forward to more posts by you, to read how you are doing.
