I just needed to write. To write about symbolism. The symbolism of a thing, a ring. My husband threw my wedding ring out the front door earlier tonight. We fought terribly, disagreed about the perception of a movie. Argued over who’s right, who’s wrong. He’s a law student. We always argue over who is right, and who is wrong. I am usually the wrong one.

Pathetic as I am. I went outside to look for the ring. Shiny hope glimmered sporadically, bouncing across the cold wet street. Shimmering asphalt and small rocks mirroring the street lights. No ring.

I am in shock. Mostly. To attach such symbolism to a thing. A ring. A marriage. The beginning. The end. I just needed to write.

Your search for the lost ring. For your marriage. Or for the spark that once kindled your love. The ring had it all, that thrown out ring. Now you have to retrieve it back. To show your husband that the marriage is still on. So is your love. Reflecting a splash of multi-coloured memories. Hope you find it back..

Perceptions are never right or wrong, they’re just perceptions. It saddens me to hear you call your seeking the ring pathetic, its anything but. Wanting to be right, wanting others to be wrong… that’s the sad thing, the pathetic thing. One teacher said “We often have to choose between being right and being kind.” I wonder why he has to be right? Why he would claw at you in such ways? And why you would take it in, let his words tear at you like that. Have you considered counselling? Disagreements are pretty usual in relationships, but in order for a marriage to last, grow, we have to learn to fight fair, to communicate peacefully.

Namaste, dear sister, may you find your ring.

    With warmth,
    Matt
