My suggestion is that you use what you posted here, something like:

“Over a month ago I said goodbye to you. I still appreciate and greatly miss you since I have thus far not met anyone else I feel I can relate too. Even while having some adventures out west and have many distractions, I think of the things you would have enjoyed if you were with me. I wanted to send you a letter, but did not know what to write to you. I do do not expect nor want you to feel that you have to reply to my letter, but would like you to know that I am open to a conversation if you ever want to talk to me. We were not close and we rarely talked to each other, so it is difficult for me to find the right words to connect to you. But I do want to connect with you.”
