Reads to me that she is not an honest person. She gave you double messages (we are friends/ we are girlfriend-boyfriend, is one message) because she didn’t want to break the engagement and she wanted you in her life. She wanted you in her life not as a friend but as a person who is in love with her.

Reads to me that you, on the other hand, are an honest person. So you  did the right thing. The reason for the dagger, as you called it, is that she didn’t get her way (staying engaged and having you in her life as a man in love with her), and she got angry, so she said something with the intention of hurting you.

When people get angry, they often proceed to hurt the person they are angry with.

Dishonest and selfish, I figure- she doesn’t care for honesty or for others’ feelings.
