Dear Emily:
Arithmetic: the traditional operations on numbers: addition (+), subtraction (-), multiplication (), division ( or /)… percentages (%), exponentiation (X2), extraction of roots (), fractions (can’t get an image of it), decimals (0.5), ratios (1 : 2), and more.
Math concepts, one of many math concepts is the concept of equality (=), when one thing is mathematically the same as another.
Measurements: measuring the size or amount of something. In the metric system of measurement, length is measured in meters (millimeters…. kilometers), mass is measured in grams (milligrams… kilograms), and temperature is measured in degrees Celsius.
Equations: here’s a very simple one 2X=10. Solving the equation: divide each side of the equation by 2, and the solution: X=5.
Applying math concepts to solve real-life problems: it’s done when counting change in the market, when measuring the length and width of a space (in your new apartment, let’s say) to see if your existing sofa will fit into it, and so much more.
How Exciting!
