Hello,
I am considering a job offer and it looks like an exciting opportunity, it’s a dream job, and it’s in an industry where it’s very tough to even get an interview. However after the interview I had some hesitations. Three days later I was offered the role. No requests for reference checks and as they know I would need to move, they have only given me two days to think about it. The employer is trying to pressure me into taking it, and said they would offer it someone else if I don’t make a decision soon. The other hesitations I have are slightly above average employee reviews, hard selling the job, not mentioning that I was the right fit for the role because of my experiences but rather, they said it would be a good opportunity for me. Not sure if I am over-analysing, but should I take the plunge or back out of it?

Doesn’t sound right to me, not the way is should be.. but then, a lot of things are not as they should be. Question is: are you expected to invest anything for getting the job and keeping it: is there a possible significant real Loss for you, if you take this job?

October 28, 2021 at 10:17 pm #387904AzaleasParticipantHi Anita, in terms of investing, it would be potential no work life balance based on the nature of the job. I know I am a hard worker, and not afraid to put in the extra hours but am more concerned about the attitude of the employer. Having the job may look quite good on my CV but am not sure if it’s worth it.

Reads to me (not a professional of any kind.. just a member here) that it is not a good idea for you to take this job simply because of this part: “The employer is trying to pressure me into taking it“. The job is in an industry that is very tough to get into- why pressure anyone to take a job unless the employer needs someone to work many hours for little pay (?), and start as soon as possible.

October 30, 2021 at 4:55 am #387929AzaleasParticipantHi Anita,
Thank you for your response. Just an update, I declined the job offer based on the above reasons. But now I’m having second thoughts because it is still, technically, a great opportunity and I have never been offered a job in this sector before, and there are some opportunities to learn more in this field and it is a very big company. At least it would make my CV stand out a bit more, and relocating looks tempting because I want my own space.
I am thinking of calling them back to ask them if the job is still opened, but I am worried that they may be offended I turned down the job because when they asked me why I turned down the offer I said (and perhaps I was being too honest) was that I felt a little uncomfortable with the job requirements (your performance is based on web hits and if you don’t meet the targets you would be questioned). The other thing that annoyed me was I was made to feel grateful they picked me though of course they didn’t say that directly. Also felt a little insulted when the employer implied I shouldn’t hope too much to land a job working in the big cities but to start regional.
Is it a good idea to ask them I have changed my mind? Or should I stick with my decision and just move on?

You are welcome. Like I told you before, I am not a professional. This means that I am not at all familiar with the industry you are referring to. I wish someone familiar would be answering you, and I wonder if there are websites where you can read from and communicate with people who work in this industry or who are trying to get into it.
The employer having pressured you to take the job is suspect to me: why would an employer, having so many candidates available for an entry job in this industry, pressure a particular person (with no work experience in the industry) to take a job?
The employer told you, while pressuring you to take the job, that “they would offer it someone else if (you) don’t make a decision soon“. You declined the offer and now, you are thinking of calling them back for the job. I am thinking: if you do call back and the employer says: yes, you can take the job.. then they didn’t “offer it to someone else”, and I will be wondering.. why not.
Is there logic in my thinking, I ask you (knowing that you are much more familiar with the industry than I am)?
Also, I wonder if you (1) overall suffer from performance anxiety (“I felt a little uncomfortable with the job requirements (your performance is based on web hits and if you don’t meet the targets you would be questioned), and (2) if you tend to get annoyed and insulted by people in general (The other thing that annoyed me.. Also felt a little insulted)?

October 30, 2021 at 3:08 pm #387938AzaleasParticipantHi Anita, I think you have made a good point about the pressuring part, especially this industry has a lot of competition and candidates. I don’t have performance anxiety, but because my ex-colleagues in another company underwent similar situations ‘re they received loads of criticism, pressure and flack for not meeting unrealistic demands they had to resign to save their sanity.
I don’t get insulted easily, but it’s more like how they implied I have never worked for a big company before and should be grateful they picked me. But in reality I have worked for major companies before. I have, as you suggested, read up on websites, employee reviews, some say they had a good experience and some say bad.
Is it ever a good idea to call back about changing your mind after rejecting an offer?

It reads to me like the person or persons who interviewed you are not or maybe are not decent, honest people. Before I call, if I was you, I’d would look deeper into the reputation of this particular company, to figure out if working for that company really will look good on your CV. Also, is the pay good enough or is it slave wages..?

October 31, 2021 at 4:11 am #387978AzaleasParticipantHi Anita, I have spent some time today looking into the company. The brand is very established, they are also growing but overall employee reviews are quite low. Individuals have written their good experiences with the company and some say management isn’t great. The pay is good enough and to be fair, it’s quite decent. I guess why I am having second thoughts is because I haven’t been quite so lucky in terms of job offers and would like to be able to have my own life again.

It sounds like if you want to advance in your field, you should take the job (if it is still available to you) and expect less than satisfactory management, long working hours and therefore, not much of your “own life again”. On the other hand, if you are in a mental state where you have to prioritize your own-life-again, otherwise you will be sick- then don’t try to get that job.
You wrote: “(I) would like to be able to have my own life again“-How long ago was it that you had your own life.. and what did it mean at the time, having your own life: how was your life back then?
