being the victim/family carer of the victim or
    the driver

I refer to a car accident that occurred recently in my city. The driver was drunk and hit a pedestrian. the pedestrian is now in a wheelchair as a quadriplegic.
I try to imagine how much guilt the driver would feel.
I try to imagine how angry and depressed the victim would feel and how bad his family would feel.

I hope I am never one of these people in such a tragedy but I have to be ready in case it happens.
I think the guilt of being the driver would make me sick to the core.
Nor I would I handle being the victim.
But I feel sorry for the driver more, strangely enough. I think guilt is such a pernicious poison to carry for the rest of one’s life.

    Hi jack,

Sometimes the situation is so bad people go numb from it. Other people will feel the pain in exquisite detail forever. I mean for day to day life it would be physically and financially harder on the victim. The driver though has the choice ~ do I beat myself up over this or let it go? What he does is then up to his personality, upbringing, and even faith.

    Dear Jack:

If the Victim in your real-life example is a child abuser, physically and sexually abusing a five year old, let’s say, and causing him to become a quadriplegic will stop his abuse of that child, simply because he will no longer be able to physically cause the abuse, then I would choose to be the driver. I would prefer though to kill the abuser so to prevent verbal abuse which he still may be possible to inflict on the child.
