I have an ex-girlfriend of 13 years who happens to be my neighbor. She has a 17 yr old daughter who I am very close to and have help raise. The ex has a dog that has been with them for 10 years who has a history of getting out due to human error and killing some stray cats. The ex now wants to get rid of the dog and bring it to a no kill pound. I would love to save the dog from that and have her live with me. However me and my girlfriend have rescued a kitten we found under the house about a year ago. We would have to get rid of the kitten in order to take on the dog aka tid-bit. Also we have plans to travel for a few months next summer and our yard is not escape proof as it needs to be. Not sure how to handle this one at all. Any suggestions or wisdom would be helpful. Thanks.

To take in the dog you would need to give your kitten away (where to?) and you would have to find a place for the dog for the few months next summer (where could that be?). You will also need to fix your yard so the dog cannot escape (can it be done and at what cost?).
Is the 17 year old daughter very attached to the dog?
What does your girlfriend think/ feel about this?

Stepdaughter called me crying asking if u could take dog. I did of course and after a few year my ex decided she wanted the dog for security purposes which was fine. Remember we are next door. Don’t know about cat locations as we asked friends but no takers. Ex agreed to pay for cost of yard and not sure where I could house her when I travel. The real reason the ex wants to get rid of her is so she can get another for her fiances children. She has stated this. A month ago she got a parrot which after one day tidbit are as we all knew would happen.

And don’t forget to extend compassion for yourself.
If the 17 year old is not very attached to the dog, that is one reason to not have the dog and keep the cat. As far as the dog vs cat- obviously it is one OR the other. Are you willing to … get rid of your cat?
In a perfect world there will be a way for you to keep the cat and take in the dog. But it is one OR the other. And then, in a perfect world you will be able to take in all the neglected and abused animals… and children.
Wait, in a perfect world there wouldn’t be neglected and abused animals or people.
In this imperfect world, a world very far from perfection in regard of what is good and just, you have to make choices of This OR That … or neither.
