    Hey guys,

    I am so overcome by fear of so many things and more importantly entrance exams. I failed in my first attempt for an entrance(college). It never feels like I cannot do it but I still mess up. I remember the simpler days when I wasn’t fearful and it was all easy. I just feel like I am living to my full potential. I failed an exam 3 years ago. I went into deep depression and lose control.

     

    In these three years I learnt a lot about yoga and meditation and learnt to channelise it to Silence my mind but I still cannot overcome my fears. The silence of my mind is broken by these irrational thoughts creepily coming over to eat me alive. I have a social anxiety which makes me also screw every interview I ever take. And when I am so scared, I procrastinate. My life is now a series of fear, procratprocrast and admid that trying to find the silence. Even when I do find silence, it ends up feeling more like my efforts of avoiding my fear.

    I stress about everything from taking a dance class to learning something to talking over on ohone or visiting someone’s place. How do I overcome?

     

    Please suggest.

    Is psychotherapy/ counseling something that is available to you?

    To manage and slowly heal from anxiety it takes a whole lot of work over a long, long time, making progress slowly. It takes slowing down our thinking and becoming mindful, living mindfully (look up the Mindful category on the home page under BLOG, if you’d like). It takes persisting with what works even when it doesn’t work every time and even though it doesn’t work perfectly (the yoga and meditation you mentioned.

    It takes trying different practices and seeing what works and what doesn’t and then at any time you feel anxious choose one practice that is practical for you to do, be it yoga or meditation or exercise, a long walk outside, or soaking the sun if it is a pleasant, sunny day. You can make a list of healthy distractions such as what I mentioned and pick any one of them during any anxious moment.

    Psychotherapy can help in teaching skills, a major one being Mindfulness as well as looking at the origin of your anxiety. In Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), you make the connection between thoughts, emotions and behavior. There are exercises in CBT that are available in books and online outside therapy itself.
