I think you did the right thing. I don’t think there is a reason to “give them a chance to explain their sides” because the scene you witnessed was self explanatory-

Each one of them was intentionally and knowingly involved in a kiss. Each one of them was aware who they were (she was aware that she was your girlfriend and that he was your best friend, and he was aware that she was your girlfriend and that he was your best friend). And still, they chose to be together in his car and kiss.

What explanation other than the evident can there be, that would make the situation different than what it was…
