DiemParticipantSince I was 5-6 years old, I questioned my existence and why I’m here and why any of us exist. Frustrated until I was in my 20s when I found my purpose in helping others so I decided to work in education. I work with at risk youth that are high school dropouts and for ten years it was personally rewarding as I felt like I made an impact but it is wearing me out emotionally and mentally. I try to help others whenever I can with whoever I encounter.
Lately I feel like I should be doing something else and question the path I should be heading in. I tried searching online for how to find my spiritually path that is for me and most suggested meditation to seek answers. Googling around brought me here to this website. How did you find a path that you felt aligned with?

AnonymousGuestDear Diem:
My very short answer to your question is: I paid attention.
Maybe you chose a helping profession because, like a whole lots of people (most if not all psychotherapists, for example), you too needed help as a child and didn’t receive it. So you “try to help others whenever (you) can”, to give others what was not given to you.
My personal experience is that my efforts to help others wore me out too until I realized that I needed help and I wasn’t getting by proxy, that is by helping others. Or should I say, trying to help others.
What do you think?

MaeganParticipantI was a therapist and taught cognitive and energetic healing for decades. As you have noticed, such a practice can become draining, usually because of the influences around me that required me to shift my focus away from my chosen work. Right now, at 70, I am looking at the ways I have been depleted over the years and reassessing my needs and priorities. Being with yourself (meditation by another name) is useful. Journaling can be useful. You need to find what will bring balance into your life. It may be a complete change in careers, but it may also be a more subtle change in focus, like writing. Studying this chart may lead you to find what your looking for – your reason for getting up in the morning – your ikigai https://www.thegeniusworks.com/2017/08/secret-okinawa-%E7%94%9F%E3%81%8D%E7%94%B2%E6%96%90-ikigai-reason-wake-every-morning/
It is the small triangular spaces, the spaces with arrows that describe what is out of balance, that I have found most interesting to explore
