Hi friends! Happy Thanksgiving to those of you who celebrate.

I’m so grateful to all of you who share your experiences and insights on the blog, and to those who you who give your time and energy to help others in the comments and community forums. I am endlessly inspired by your openness, your empathy, and your kindness.

To celebrate this day, I gathered some of my favorite gratitude quotes (mostly from anonymous sources), and I’ve also put aside two copies of Tiny Buddha’s Gratitude Journal for a special giveaway.

About the Journal

Including questions and prompts pertaining to both your past and present, the journal will help you see your life through a new, more positive lens.

The book also includes fifteen coloring pages, depicting awesome things we often take for granted, like nature and music.

With space for written reflection, these pages provide all the benefits of coloring—including mindfulness and stress relief—and also guide you to recognize the beauty in the ordinary.

Whether you’ve been gratitude journaling for years or you’re just giving it a try for the first time, Tiny Buddha’s Gratitude Journal will help you access a state of inner peace, contentment, and joy.

The Giveaway

  • To enter to win one of two free copies of  Tiny Buddha’s Gratitude Journal, leave a comment below sharing something you’re grateful for today.
  • For a second entry, share this post on one of your social media pages and include the link in a second comment.

You can enter until midnight, PST, on Thursday, November 30th.

If you’ve already received your copy, I would appreciate if you’d leave a review on Amazon here. It doesn’t need to be long—even a tiny review can make a big difference.

The Quotes

Yes, that last one is my own quote, so it’s probably kind of odd to include it in a list of my favorites. But I wanted to add this one in case you’re going through a tough time right now and not feeling all that grateful. Be good to yourself. Take care of yourself. And know that you are loved and appreciated.

**One request before you go! Tiny Buddha has been nominated for Healthline’s Most Loved Blogs contest. If Tiny Buddha wins, the entire $1000 prize will be donated to Operation Smile to give new smiles to four children with cleft lips and palates. You can vote once daily until December 6th here. Thank you so much in advance for voting!

Your quote resonated with me, Lori. My family & I have been in a bad place this past 18 months; we have to remember to be grateful that this “bad place” for us is still better than other people’s “good place”…it’s all perspective, right? I’m grateful you have brought this to my attention!

I just lost a mentor who passed away yesterday. Today, I am sad for this loss. However, I am so incredibly grateful that I knew him. He was the closest thing I had to a father–and I got to share and walk a path for several years with a living legend who inspired me and shaped me in so many ways. I have been blessed by so many teachers in my life, but he was perhaps the greatest one.
He was a strong believer in reincarnation, so I have my eyes peeled for a very wise looking baby. <3

My mother has severe dementia. My son, brother and I take care of her daily and while it can be most trying, I am grateful that she is still with us. Today is a good day. She is aware of who we are and that it is Thanksgiving. A rare day indeed. Thanksgiving was always her ‘holiday’. She always cooked a huge meal for everyone to come and share. Now that honor has been passed to me. As I dig through old recipe books I am reminded of past Thanksgiving dinners as a child. The memories are dear and sometimes bittersweet. I wish my mom could remember them as well. So now I take life one day at a time, thankful for the moments when my mom remembers her life and that I am her daughter.

Today I am thankful for the kindness of strangers in Minneapolis airport. I just witnessed one waitress serve an an entire cafe of people breakfast at rush hour on Thanksgiving morning. And instead of any person getting upset about their order being delayed or not getting their check exactly when they wanted it , every single customer went out of their way to share kind, compassionate words of gratitude and understanding with that hardworking waitress, who went from stressed out and worried, to utterly glowing. Today is Thanksgiving

The air blows cool and crisp upon my face,

My eyes gaze upwards with wonder

To a blue sky – what is today?

    The answer plays

    Within the heart corridors,

    Memories of

    Thanksgivings past.

    Giggles and kid laughter,

As we zip into a warm

    Kitchen filled with

    Spicy scents of family recipes.

    Racing outside without coats

    To catch the first season’s

    On our tongues.

    Bowing our heads,

    Holding hands,

    As a family,

    To say grace.

    Then the heart corridor

    Leads to another

    Time, when the heart

    Was grazed with pain.

    Pain of saying

    Good-bye to

    Loved ones lost.

    Times of loneliness,

    On a holiday,

    Spent away

    In a war zone.

    The air whips around

    My face,

    Reminding me today

    Is Now,

    Filled with the

    Beauty of

    Each emotion, past and

    Filling my heart with

    Gratitude for this

    Thanksgiving, because it is

    Fresh with new

    Breath to send

    Love to times past

    Love to times present

I am very grateful I live in Canada, after hearing about all the mass shootings, natural disasters and horrible leaders, I couldn’t be more grateful to live in a country where my neighbour doesn’t own a gun, and our leader is a young and honourable person; yey Canada!

  • Kylin Jewell

I spent my first holiday at a group home I work at today. Usually I just show up at one of my parents’ houses and the food is already made. The kids all pitched in to make the meal and when we sat down each of us shared how grateful we were to be here with our temporary family. I was almost moved to tears (had to hold it together!) as they all shared why they were grateful for their peers and for staff members. Growing up, I always took this holiday for granted – found it annoying even because it meant choosing between homes… between parents… but these kids sure do help put everything in perspective. Today I am grateful for my biological family, my chosen family, and my group home/ work family.

Especially since I already am a writer, having a journal would just make it easier for me to to practice gratitude! Happy Thanks

  • Carrie Akamine

I am grateful for my children, family & friends. Without their love & support, I would still be lost, battling my own personal demons. This year I have come to realize I am worthy of love & I have much to be grateful for. Tomorrow is not promised & it took the deaths of my father, my daughter’s father & his father, to understand the value of life. Mahalo nui loa (Thank you very much in Hawaiian) to everyone in my life for I cannot do it alone & without you I am incomplete…

  • Annie Bradley

I am really grateful for the support that I am receiving from my family. The last few years have been challenging to say the least after a marriage breakdown and changing my life direction and going back to study. I have just finished uni and got my first job, of that I am grateful too! My pa has bought me a car to get to work and my brother is helping me get confident at driving after not driving for four years after passing my test. Absolutely so much to be grateful for!!!!

I am grateful for all of life’s experiences that have led me to today. Living in a house of fear due to abuse as a child, married/divorced by age 30. Spent several years dating a man who abused me… all to lead me to my “why” in life live, learn, grow, share, teach, and create awareness. I am grateful for all my experiences because they allowed me to find the woman I was…I am…and the voice I never knew I had. I share my story in the community to speak for myself (my mom) as well as those who are unable to do so… to bring greater awareness around domestic violence and sexual assault. Fast forward to today…to finally finding my true love…my man. I am in love and looking forward to my new chapter…

I’m grateful for the tiny person created by my husband and myself who drives me completely insane but reminds me every day that I AM a good mom, especially when I’m questioning myself. All of the struggles I go through are a way for me to learn the things that I can teach her. She knows that she is loved, that none of us are perfect but as long as we do the best we can, love and respect each other, that’s all we need. She loves me more than anything in the world – that’s intense and really scary to think about sometimes but I want her to know that I screw up, I make mistakes, and it’s okay for her to make them too. My greatest hope is that she grows up to be better than me & hopefully I can help her get there 🙂

I am grateful that my dad who has recently been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer (NET – neuro endocrine tumours) has been given a prognosis of 2 to 5 possibly 6 years to live, 4 weeks ago he was told he had 2-6 months left to live. I have a 2 1/1 year old who loves his pap to bits and a baby on the way. I am so grateful that we will have more time together.

this week has been a challenge – I am just starting my own business, which I am SO THANKFUL for the opportunity to do so – but ironing out the kinks has been pretty stressful. Love seeing Tiny Buddha pop up in my in box, it is a great reminder to take a deep breath, and relax.

  • Today, I’m grateful for all those amazing living beings in my life and our beautiful mother Earth.

  • Marc Remington

Normally my response would be to thank everyone else and forget about myself. Not this year. This year I am thanking myself for a change. I am thankful that I have had the strength to put my feelings, my thoughts, my needs, and my survival ahead of everyone else. I am thankful that I am learning about my codependency and that I can overcome this and learn to live and be happy again. I am thankful that I don’t have to feel guilty about thinking about myself and saying “no” to what makes the people around me feel better. This Thanksgiving hasn’t been easy. Going through a divorce, being away from family and friends. But I am still thankful that I am doing it on my terms this year. I hope that you can be thankful for you as well.

  • I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Tiny Buddha’s Gratitude Journal – It would be so awesome to win one to give as a gift! Something I’m grateful for today and everyday is clean water. Every time I take a shower I think: Warm, clean water falling from the sky! Such a blessing, everyday.

  • Brooke Venoy

I am grateful to be an HSP (Highly Sensitive Person), even though it means that I’m deeply affected by the pain and suffering I see in the world around me. It’s very difficult to cope with sometimes, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I am grateful for the sources of love in my life who stand by me, and I’m also grateful for my two sweet cats whom I love with wild abandon! I am grateful to have the gift of this day: another chance to open up to all that life has to offer!

  • Angela Gross

I am thankful for my friends, who put a smile on my face. I am thankful that I can afford to have a dog, who fills my heart with such simple joy. Today I am grateful that my 84 year old stepfather is doing great, which allows him to take care of my 74 year old mother, who has severe cognitive impairment. Thank God she knows who I am and hopefully that won’t ever change! I’d love to win this journal because I usually fret about what I don’t have and not feel grateful for what I do have.

  • Judy Schechter
  • I am thoroughly grateful for shelter over my head, warm clothes, hot wonderful tasting food and my chosen family. I have lived for years without all these, so I guess that is why I am able to be so very grateful.

I am forever grateful for my two younger sisters who are my best friends. They know me better than anyone in the world and I don’t know what I’d do without them. They understand me, make me laugh, and are always willing to sing to our 80’s playlist together. So grateful!

  • Mary

I’m grateful for Tiny Buddha. I woke up this morning feeling a little low after a bad night sleep. These quotes have given me a wake up call. I couldn’t sleep in a cosy, warm bed, next to my wonderful husband, down the corridor from my 2 beautiful healthy, children. I have a great deal to be grateful for.

  • I’ve bought the journal and just received it yesterday in the mail 🙂 LOVE IT!

I am so grateful and thankful for my unfriendly sickly cat who just moved in many years ago. At first she was a bind when I met my partner and she stopped me from moving abroad with him, but ultimately saved my life when he turned out to be an abuser. I now look at all things I don’t want to happen in a new light.

Today I am grateful for my family. I grew up with one brother and our parents. We were blessed to live close to our grandparents. I have a family of my own, with a husband of 25 years and three mostly grown children, As a family, we don’t always agree, we don’t always understand one another clearly, but we love one another and I know we have each other’s backs.

  • Captain America

This weekend, I have been grateful for: A good night’s rest, my cat purring when I hug him, and him hugging me back, an amazing hot shower, and a hot meal shared among the only friends I have. They aren’t much…but it’s what I have. And it is enough.

  • RecoveringDJ

I’m grateful for the contact lens I put in every morning that allows me to see the world clearly. Without them, my world is a blur and I would be barely functional. Thank you, my wonderful contacts that lets me view the world without glasses! (I used to get headaches and a whole host of other problems with glasses so… yay contacts!)

Today I am grateful for the constancy of change. So often change scares me…I keep trying to control everything! Today I can see change brings that novelty sometimes very subtle, the novelty I love and seek. What I am saying, I am grateful to recognize that I have exactly what I want and need.

  • Maria Chinn

I am grateful for everything that life has offered me. The good, the bad and the ugly because each one of those experiences has made the person I am today. And for what is still to come I say “Bring it one!” so I will have more to be grateful for 🙂

My father has always been a source of anguish and resentment because of his style of communication. My siblings and I always were upset at how he treated us and we wished for him to be kinder to us and not expect so much from us. Yesterday we hit a breaking point where we have all shared hurts and sorrow from being unable to express our needs and our love for one another. I noticed we all become isolated from a day to day basis, my brother on his computer, my mom and dad with the ipad, and I would retreat into my room since everyone was separated. We all broke down and managed to express some of our emotions boiling inside, although it wasn’t perfect I am thankful to have my family that is always supporting me regardless of how we may not be extremely close. We all need to change how we react and speak to each other and it didn’t seem fair to me for the longest time, but in order to live peacefully together it must be done. Our sense of love for one another and it’s expression has been smothered into a small ember, we can’t remember when it happened but we are all craving love and affection from one another. No matter what happens, each moment is an opportunity. Whether we use it for good or for worse is our decision, now I am truly understanding this notion. It is the difference between a life of regret and resentment and a life with understanding and compassion for each other. I can’t say that I am quite there yet, but of course like most things it is a journey and I appreciate being able to be aware and mindful of having a choice to feed the wolf that allows me happiness or the one that brings me hatred and sorrow.

I have had so much grief to deal with the last 11 years and today I had applied for a job which would of changed my whole life around. Though it did not work out. But I am grateful for the experience and excellent feedback and understand, that even if I believed this job was “perfect for me”,it was “not the perfect time” to happen for me. Thank you.

I am so thankful that I found Buddhism recently and am finding happiness and peace when I couldn’t before. At work I send Monday emails and most of the time they are from this site. I appreciate the encouragement and just want to share it with others.

I am grateful to have learned to think and view the world in a more positive and exciting way. I am grateful to have learned that while I always thought I was very in-touch with my feelings, I would often allow myself to be led by my feelings. Now, with prayer and focusing on positive things, I am more cognizant of when I have negative internal dialogue and I focus on trying to avoid thinking things that will take away the joy or happiness I can feel that day.

  • Tracie Thompson

Honestly, of all the wonderful quotes, the last is my favorite. When I’m feeling down and know I should be thankful for SO many things it actually makes me feel worse that I’m not thankful, making it harder to be thankful. It’s a vicious cycle that, at least for me, only time can break. And sometimes it feels like an extremely long time! so allowing myself/giving myself permission to have the feelings before I start hammering away at the positive thinking/be thankful for everything process is liberating all in itself.

  • Roma

I am grateful for my personal journey in recovery.

  • Thanh Lam

I am happy and grateful that I came across this article. I am going to print these beautiful quotes and images to deodorate my work desk. I love tinybuddha articles. I am blessed to read such profound articles. The best part of my day would have to be eating dinner with my parents and we had an insightful conversation where I discovered the true reason why he doesn’t compliment his children and the deep love he has for 5 of us. I am so blessed to be alive as my parents struggled to bring me into this world. I am blessed by them who has shaped who I am. Thank you for giving me this chance to share something so deep and meaningful. With love, grace and gratitude, Thanh Lam ????????

  • Airianna Thompson

I am grateful for the positive energy of the universe and it’s ability to keep me going when I can’t seem to find a reason to. I’m grateful for being granted the chance to not only find myself, but create her. I’m grateful that I have faith and love to give me strength on this journey. And I am grateful to have tinybuddha to uplift my spirits and guide me on the good days and the bad…
I’m grateful that I haven’t given up on this life and that many others are finding the strength to keep trying in a world that wants you to do anything but.

  • Miia S

Hi! Thank you for this post ? It’s so easy to forget to be thankful as I charge through the work day and allow my anxiety to overwhelm me when I’m pulled in a million different directions. I am thankful for being able to breathe, stretch, and find my way back to feeling at peace after a few minutes of yogic breathing and holding hip flexor poses. When I’m calm, I am more mindful and feel more gratitude. It’s a gift from the universe that we all have this capacity within us to be content wherever we are, whenever we need ❤️️
