Buddha Doodles Review and Book Giveaway – Whimsical Drawings with Deep Truths

Buddha Doodles Imagine the PossibilitiesNote: The winners for this giveaway have been chosen.

When I first found Molly Hahn’s Buddha Doodles a few years back, I knew I’d stumbled upon something special.

Her whimsical illustrations never failed to put a smile on my face, and they often came with just the message I needed to read on a given day.

I was even more enthralled when I learned about Molly’s background, and why she started Buddha Doodles.

Having endured a traumatic childhood, she began her meditative sketch practice as part of her healing process. And I, along with hundreds of thousands of other fans, couldn’t be more grateful that she did.

“Light in heart but deep in intent,” as she writes, her illustrations uplift, inspire, and empower us all to be wiser, happier, more mindful people.

    I recently read The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle and find it to be one of the most important writings available for most people to read. If I were in charge of creating a new religious text, The Power of Now would be my first book to follow.
    If I were to have a chance to pick another, book two would be A Fresh Cup of Tolerance by Dr. Tom Norris. It focuses on Universalism: The New Religion of Tolerance.
    Check ’em out!

    I am inspired by people who have gone through some horrific things but come out on the other side greatful and full of life. I try to live by their example. If they can endure terrible pain and suffering and learn and heal and become better then I can too. I would love a book.

    “Keep walking though there’s no place to get to.
    Don’t try to see through distances.
    That’s not for human beings. Move within,
    But don’t move the way fear makes you move.” -Rumi
    I started running marathons after cancer and a double mastectomy 13 years ago.
    This Rumi quote speaks to me in many ways; sometimes I substitute “running” for walking.
    I especially like not moving the way fear make you move. In my life, that’s one of my priorities. Good advice for so many situations.

    Recently I saw a women bringing a homeless man a blanket while he was hobbling down the streets on crutches on a cold day here in Birmingham, AL while on my way to work. I was to touched and inspired that I did the same later that day for another person.

  • I was at Target with my daughter the other day. The girl in front of us overheard my daughter asking for a Starbucks and me telling her, “not this time”. I tend to adopt new mantras as they appear in my life in a relevant way. It helps me to keep focus in my bustling life as a special education teacher and a mom and reminds me that I am a but a speck in a vast universe of energy and creation.

    Lately, my mantra has been, “As above, so below. As within, so with out.”

    My grandmother inspired me, she was always truthful, kind and giving. Expecting nothing from anyone and giving all she had to make others happy. Working with my son who struggles with ADHD is certainly a challenge but she as well as he has inspired me to see that there are always other ways to accomplish things and the best lessons may take time. Learn to stay positive through it all.

    Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities have crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; you shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense. -Ralph Waldo Emerson

    I love this quote more as time goes by. It reminds me not to get so attached to outcome or to overstate my mistakes. Honestly, I am not a brain surgeon or an airline pilot. I sit in a cube most of the day doing me best and sometimes my best falls short of my expectations. Remembering that every day is a new experience, that the present moment is the only moment in which I can do anything, helps me get past days when things aren’t going my way or the way I think they should. If I breathe and wait, a new day will dawn. A new opportunity. A new moment that need not be negatively impacted by the day before. I can come at it again with new energy and “too high a spirit to be encumbered” by my nonsense. 🙂

    This may sound self-serving, but I am inspired by the fact that I was able (recently) to forgive my abuser and my mother for the horrific abuse I suffered as a child. My mom died in November 2014. Just a few days before the 1-year anniversary of her death last year, I serendipitously stumbled onto a web page with this title:

    “An 80-Year-Old Singing Coldplay’s ‘Fix You’ Is One Of The Most Powerful Performances You’ll See”

    Although that article begins with the words, “Have your tissues ready. Seriously.”, and I knew it was going to be an emotional encounter, I went for it. It introduces the singer, Fred Knittle, as a member of the “Young @ Heart Chorus, a Massachusetts singing group made up entirely of people aged 73 to 89.” Embedded in that article is a YouTube video of his performance and, unsurprisingly, I was quickly moved to tears. In a good way. If you’ve not seen it, I highly recommend it — with tissues, of course:

I have just spent over two months struggling through the darkness and I held on to the fact that things will change because they must. They have changed already. I feel stronger and more in tune with myself and know that I must care for myself at all times. I need to be the constant in the ever flowing sea of change that is life.

    Hi Lori
    Your site re inspires me every day! Thank you so much!

    But i try to always model myself on the so-called Peace Prayer of St Francis:
    “Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace.

    Where there is hatred, let me sow love;

    Where there is injury, pardon;

    Where there is doubt, faith;

    Where there is despair, hope;

    Where there is darkness, light;

    Where there is sadness, joy.

    O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek

    To be consoled as to console,

    To be understood as to understand,

    To be loved as to love;

    For it is in giving that we receive;

    It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;

    It is in dying to self that we are born to eternal life.”

    I was recently inspired by an act of kindness. I saw this guy, big mean looking guy, tatted all over. I was on the train, getting home from support group. It was really hot, we were all smushed up together like anchovies. There was a homeless man. He looked a little sad. I’d been watching him, as recently I’ve been noticing people more. Anyway, this big guy sits next to this homeless guy. And he shares his meal with him, , and gives him his juice. He started talking to him, asking him about himself, what he’s been up to, talking about music. They laughed. He looked happier. I had wanted to give him my sandwich before the man had sat next to him. I was too scared. I thought he’d shun me or think i felt pity and get mad at me or something. So many times have I remained still because of fear, not said hello, not smiled, not given. But this guy, he just went up to him, and acknowledged the homeless guy. Yeah, you are a person, yes I do see you. I cried lol, and I noticed people watching this act of love to a stranger. Too often wre we so involved in this bubble we call our world, not remembering theres a whole existences away from our self involved perception. I felt this guy was doing something wed all remember, at least I will. I’ll carry it with me. Next time, I won’t look away. Maybe a smile, or one small act of kindness will make all the difference to someone’s life

    A beautiful, inspiring poem by Portia Nelson:

    “I walk down the street.
    There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
    I fall in.
    I am lost… I am helpless.
    It isn’t my fault.
    It takes forever to find a way out.

    I walk down the same street.
    There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
    I pretend I don’t see it.
    I fall in again.
    I can’t believe I am in the same place.
    But, it isn’t my fault.
    It still takes me a long time to get out.

    I walk down the same street.
    There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
    I see it is there.
    I still fall in. It’s a habit.
    My eyes are open.
    I know where I am.
    It is my fault. I get out immediately.

    I walk down the same street.
    There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
    I walk around it.

    I walk down another street.”

    My dear son just gave me a Mantra Bracelet that says NEVER GIVE UP. The Mantra that came along with the bracelet is: ‘Never give up on your dreams. Never give up on yourself. Keep the faith. Take action. Persevere. Believe in miracles. Because as long as you are alive, anything is possible.’ This gift brought tears to my eyes that he would give me such a much-needed gift right now.
