Not everything is from something that we were told in childhood, like not being worthy of good things. It may be true for some, but not all. I think some of us were raised with people who were compassionate and we learned compassion. I’ve seen good people who don’t deserve the crap hand they were dealt, while horrible people seem to have all the luck. While some people do make bad choices, that is only a small part. It’s much more complex than that. I see all those complexities. I don’t know that it’s so much guilt as it is compassion for the less fortunate. Rather than place blame unfairly, I show compassion even if it’s only a small gesture. I’ve always been a friend to the underdog because the popular ones don’t really need my compassion. So maybe it’s not truly guilt, maybe it’s compassion which then leads us to gratitude for our own lucky breaks which then leads us to act in ways to reduce others’ suffering.
