I have had tinnitus for coming up to 20 years. I was reading another post and spotted the word on this forum. Initially, I found it hard – so conscience of the sound, which lead me to listen out for it more. Years ago, I found other sounds distracted my mind from ‘listening’ out for it. The radio, a fan as above, natural sounds cd’s on loop like rain, or waves lapping – there is a lot more out there that appeals to the individual. Strangely, when I was trying to go to sleep, I was aware – but during the night, if I were to wake, as I was in a deeper zone, I found the sound quite distant. Also, having the window open in my room, with exterior sounds distracted my mind too. So all in all, took a few years to get used to it, and the above worked for me, tinnitus not affecting my life – as all of these sounds smothered the tinnitus. As for now, I don’t use any of the above and haven’t for years. You will be fine I am sure, took me years as I never researched it at the time, and there are so many other aids – rather than the above – that works for the individual. The only time I ever hear tinnitus, is in a quiet room and at night. I also found being really tired through exercise etc daily and being busy, helped me to drift off early at night. There’s also a lot of psychology with this as well (I believe), maybe see a specialist too – a good diet helps I have read, worked for me – the sound appeared to have lowered – low salt intake, low caffeine and alcohol. Lots you can do towards this, read a few forums too, you’d be surprised at the positive writings from others 🙂
