To try to understand your situation a bit, I will ask a couple of questions:
1. You wrote “it was quite selfish” for you tell the person how you felt about him. Why do you think it was selfish to tell him how you felt?
2. You wrote: “Unfortunately the other person only saw me as a friend, despite signs and signals telling me otherwise”- what were those signs and signals?
