Things have been pretty good on my end, but I’m encountering a problem that I’ve had before. Once things seem to settle in place, for some reason I get restless, emotionally. As if I should constantly be accomplishing things on a daily basis?

I think it stems from life generally being fast-paced? That, and I have a fear of wasting what little time I have on Earth, because I know life is short and can fly by. I think I have a problem with taking it easy because I fear I’m not getting anywhere even though I technically can’t progress right now. I can’t start a career or travel or do much to achieve my dreams until college starts and I get a job and start being independent, so all of these things seem daunting.
Realistically I should be focusing on getting through second semester, which starts tomorrow, with good grades. That’s the current goal I can work on, but it doesn’t require much effort. So at times I just end up thinking too much and after a day of not doing much I start to wonder if I should have been working towards something else.

Does anyone else know the sort of restlessness I’m feeling? And if so, do you know of any ways to make that feeling go away? Or to deal with it, at least. I don’t like feeling like I have to constantly be doing things, yet when I stop I wonder if I’m doing the best I can.

Maybe I’m tired or maybe it’s the rainy weather we’ve been having, I’m not sure. Otherwise my life has been just fine and fun and I’m looking forward to the new year.

    Dear Isra:

Yes, I know that restlessness, more so seeing it in other people, at this point in my life.

The thought that life is short and will be over too soon, and therefore we should do, do and accomplish is an unrealistic thought in that life is as long as it is no matter how much you do and accomplish. The doing and accomplishing has nothing to do with mortality- we die anyway. People try to achieve immortality by becoming rich and politically powerful; living in big, expensive homes, driving fancy cars… but none of these things achieve immortality.

And it is common for people to rush, to look forward to the next thing, even when on a vacation in an exotic place, the thought occurs: what is next?

This is your first day in the new semester. Try to relax into your daily life as it is, moment by moment, hour by hour. Pay attention to what you see, hear, feel; look around you, be curious about the people you come in contact with. Be Mindful, Here and Now.

The more mindful, the more present, the less restless you will be.

    Hi Isra,

So I believe patience is the solution to your problem. Restlessness, impulsiveness, impatience, etc can mess up your entire life if they aren’t controlled at the right time. They might force you to take rash decisions which might land you in a very serious problem and no amount of guilt or regret can help you to amend anything. So I advice you to become more patient. Tone down a bit.The following tips can help you to become patient. I have added only those tips that have worked for me.

    1) MEDITATION

Yoga and meditation are two different things. Yoga conditions your body and meditation conditions your mind. Practise meditation. Meditation also includes techniques to improve MINDFULNESS which will help you to stay more focused in life. Follow are the steps of meditation :

Step 1: Sit in a dark and silent room. Sit in a relaxed position. Make sure you feel very comfortable
Step 2: Join your hands, close your eyes and think of God for a couple of minutes
Step 3: After this, concentrate on your breathe. Don’t breathe in and out forcefully. Just concentrate on your breathe. Focus on how you inhale and exhale.
Step 4: Visualise everything that you did the previous day and simultaneously give yourself advice on what you should or shouldn’t have done, what you should or shouldn’t have said, etc. Bring those mistakes to your notice and improvise.
Step 5: Visualise what you are planning to do that particular day
Step 6: Prepare a schedule immediately

    2) PCCP spell

I call it the PCCP spell because whenever I tell the following statement to myself I feel super-relaxed. It works like a spell. Whenever I feel restless I tell myself ” Be PATIENT, CALM down, CALM down, be PATIENT”…I tell this 3-4 times and I feel relieved instantly. The level of anxiety drops down drastically. So whenever you start getting impulsive tell the above mentioned statement 3-4 times till you feel relaxed .

    3) CONCENTRATE ON YOUR BREATHE

Do this 3-4 times a day. Like I mentioned previously, don’t breathe in and out forcefully. Just focus on your breathe. See how you inhale and exhale. Do this 3-4 times a day and you will be flabbergasted with the results. It has helped me a lot to control my impulses. I hope it helps you too.

    4)SCHEDULE

Having a schedule will help reduce your frustration and inevitably will help you to reduce restlessness. I have been doing this for the past 5 years and I can assure you that your life will change drastically if you plan out things and follow them.
Prepare a schedule after meditation or the night before. Give time slots to each task. Once you get done with a particular task mark it. At the end of the day again see your schedule. Whatever isn’t marked include it in the next day’s schedule that is do it the next day.

    5) GIVE YOURSELF TIME

It takes time to develop patience but that’s okay. In the process of learning to become more patient, you will become more sorted and of course more mature. So don’t lose hopes if you find yourself getting impatient. It will take time but it will happen for sure. You might find yourself getting impulsive or frustrated but that’s okay. Work hard to be more patient. Do internet research if you want and I am sure your restlessness or impulsiveness will surely come down.

I hope the above advice has helped you to a certain extent. I hope you become more patient and may God bless you to become a better human being . All the best and take care.

    Hi Isra,

It doesn’t appear to be anything other than restlessness you are facing and it can be calmed down by doing some relaxing techniques.
Along side with what lovetomotivate has suggested I also want you to take a look at several relaxation and meditation techniques posted here, by the people and for the people, and pick the ones that you feel comfortable with.

Hi lovetomotivate, if you prefer you could also share your above tips and techniques at the same link beneficial to someone or the other on one single page.

    Warm regards,

Thank you all very much for your advice and support. I’ll definitely get to trying some of these techniques to slow down. I think it’s just the hype of so much happening soon, like graduation from high school and starting college. A lot is going to happen and I’m going to need to be getting a job and driving more and that sort of thing.

Nonetheless, yesterday was helpful because my first day back to school was great. I have friends in some of my classes now and a small lunch table and it’s a nice change of pace. Looking forward to my classes and a smooth rest of my senior year.
