This week I came across a John Maxwell (2011) quote that states “Care without candor creates dysfunctional relationships. Candor without care creates distant relationships. But care balanced with candor creates developing relationships” (p. 112). I think Maxwell’s thoughts depict a clear picture of the balance that we must strike as we strive to have authentic professional relationships.
A similar concept I have come across is from Dr. Henry Cloud. Cloud describes the need for us to balance our relationships with both grace and truth. Ultimately, relationships that only focus on care /grace or candor/ truth will not help the involved individuals develop to their fullest potential.
In relationships, do you feel more natural practicing care of candor? How would developing both qualities increase your influence with those around you?
