I am a single mom to two kids (3 and 8). I’ve been dating a man for quite sometime now and we’ve been through some significant ups and downs. It is no doubt that we love each other fully and we want to spend our lives together. He recently lost his business and it did something to him. He lost himself. He feels like the only way to find himself is to go on a 4-6 week long adventure in Thailand. His delivery of the topic was nothing short of cold and non-negotiable.

Im having a really hard time finding a way to support him. He told me at one point he would be willing to give me up to go on the trip. That’s how important it is to him.

Part of the reason I’m struggling so much is that my kids love him and won’t understand why he’s gone for so long. Like I said we have gone through some serious ups and downs and about 6 months ago I told him not to pursue me until he was really ready to be in this 100%.

I know this trip isn’t about me, or us, but it still affects me and our relationship and I’m struggling to find a way to be okay with it.

    Dear Megan Rae:

It reads to me that if you want to continue this relationship you have to find a way to be okay with the trip. It is only 4-6 weeks, not that long, is it? Not like a six month adventure would have been. It doesn’t read to me that his plan to have this trip is a betrayal of your sentiment expressed to him (“I told him not to pursue me until he was really ready to be in this 100%.)

Reads to me that he believes that this trip is necessary for his well-being, his mental well-being, and so, it is necessary in him being “in this 100%”, or close to it. Without well-being, his commitment to you and to your children will be greatly compromised.
