My partner and I have been together 21 years without incident. This past year has seen his behaviour change (he is 46 ), he has started drinking after work. We have a late night takeaway so I am at home in bed when he is drinking. He drinks he said because it releases stress and he enjoys company. Some of this company has been from the lap dancing bar opposite our takeaway. I found him one morning when he hadn’t returned home from a session asleep on the floor with one of the dancers. She was dressed and were not in close proximity but under the duvet together ‘smashed’
I confronted him about this he said nothing as ever happened which I believe but to cut to a short story I have become mistrusting and watch his every move to which he has said if I don’t give him the space to be himself , it is over between us. He always comes home but at varying times and often drinks with staff or other friends who work late nights.
Is it a phase he is going through ?? Or wanting to breakaway ??

    Dear tez56:

I don’t know. Got to get the answer/s from him. He probably doesn’t have the answers to all questions, but he does, to a few questions. He already answered you about the reason he drinks: “because it releases stress and he enjoys company”- so there is an answer to one question! Let’s look at this answer closer.

He is or was stressed; this is why he needs the release of stress. Are there recent reasons for increased stress in his life? An event or a series of events in his life; changes that happened recently?

Does he have children (minor or adult) and have there been recent developments in their lives/ in is relationships with them? How about other family members (same question)?

Financial developments of late? Certain worries he expressed recently?
