Hi everyone, first of all, thank you for checking out my post!
So I’ve been unemployed for the past 18 months. Tried the digital nomad lifestyle and was able to find some side-gigs for a while, but unfortunately, I couldn’t sustain that lifestyle and things didn’t work out. So in actuality, I’ve only been actively searching for a full-time job for a few months now.
About a week ago, I had an interview at the Australian Embassy for a contract position as a visa processing officer. It was also my very first government interview and I was so nervous I was barely myself haha. So yeah, I did not do well.
Anyway, I’ve been 0ffered the job but I’m struggling to decide whether or not to accept this offer. I’ve been out of work so long that I really can’t afford to make any more of these career mistakes. If I were to accept this job offer, I’d be employed under one-year contract. There’s also no guarantee my contract would be renewed, and I just feel that it’d be devasting to go through all the job hunting and interviews all over again. It’s truly soul crushing.
At the moment, there’s also the possibility that I might receive another job offer at a local advertising company, as an events/marketing manager.
I guess I’m just not sure which career path should I go after. Also, I should note that I dropped out of university at the end of the second year (psychology), so my choices are somewhat limited. Working at Australian Embassy does sound like a great opportunity (great culture too) but I was just wondering how far can a visa officer go, in terms of the career path? I’m afraid it’d be like any other dead-end jobs – not to mention the possibility of not having my contract renewed.
What would you do?

I can’t answer “how far can a visa officer go, in terms of a career path?” Perhaps you can research that.
When will you know if there is a job available to you at the local advertising company is a valid question, as well as what are your chances to receive that job. And… since you asked regarding the other job, how far can you go with this job, in terms of a career path?
Pay and benefits is another consideration.
If you have the first job available for you to take and no other job, then I would take it, if I was you. It reads interesting to me, so I would be motivated.
There are such jobs heavily regulated by workers unions where you are secure, it seems, from the moment you accept the job for the coming decades until retired, with salary regularly increasing with time, according to a set salary table, regular raises, and such. Outside such jobs, it is hard to predict what will benefit you as the job market changes a lot.

That was actually one of the questions I wanted to ask at the end of the interview but I was too nervous my mind went blank. Wish I could’ve done better.
I’d probably get an answer by the end of this week, which is great, as I believe I’ll have to make a decision by then. And hopefully I’d be able to start working next week.
I was previously in the similar industry (brand activation), and I think for events / marketing, there’s a plenty of growth, particularly digital marketing, something I’ve been investing a lot of time in.
And both jobs pay well. And yes you’re right, I think if I don’t hear from the advertising company by this week, I’ll go on with the other.
At least I’ll have one year to figure out my next move. Right now my top priority is to pull myself out of this shitty unemployment rut.

Maybe you can contact the people at the advertising company and tell them that you are considering another job in a few days, needing to be employed soon, but that you prefer the job at the ad company, then ask if they can look at you as a candidate for the job sooner than later?
