This is a question that has been on my mind for a long time.

Let’s say someone is an alcoholic, addicted to drugs, or drowning in their own pain and thus directly or indirectly harming those around them.

Should we intervene or could it happen that we will harm this person by interfering with their karma? I mean, isn’t it possible that this person has to go through this severe suffering in order to be able to achieve a certain enlightenment on their path in this life? However, don’t we then become “complicit” if, God forbid, a tragedy happens?

What if such a person is not open to their change?

    I know it’s very individual. It’s a complicated question.

I realize that in such cases the teachings of Right Speech and the question of “if & how to engage (…) when the other persons are not in a place of openness & empathy.” (Thank you, Roberta, for giving me opportunity to think deeply about this) is very difficult for me.

    Hi Yana

I think it depends on the laws in your country.

Also, if there are underage children living with the person.

Violence towards underage children and underage children witnessing domestic violence are particularly at risk.

I don’t know what kind of action social work in your country might take. In mine, families are separated in these cases.

There is very little that can be done about domestic violence towards an adult in my country unless the victim wishes to prosecute. In addition, the victim can often be implicated.

There is very little that can be done here when it comes to suicidal thoughts unless they actually start physically harming themselves.
