In a way this is a bit like the ‘Airports’ topic, but with differences!

Driving in the UK is no longer a pleasure, nearly all major roads are crowded at all times of the day and night. There is a lot of aggressive driving (probably due to the crowded nature of the roads) and road policing is almost non-existent due to financial cutbacks.

I no longer drive fast (although I always drive to the conditions I tend normally to do between 63-67 on motorways, and maybe 53-56 on main A roads, and always within the limits in town) as a consequence I suffer with tailgating, and dangerous overtakes. But what really seems to upset me are the ‘racing starts’ away from traffic lights and at roundabouts.

I plan my journeys, I always leave plenty of time. How can I modify my mindset so that I find driving less stressful and maybe recover some of the pleasure?

    Dear Mike:

Reads to me like you have to pay more attention to driving than before, expect aggressive, impulsive moves, and so I don’t think it is possible for driving to be a pleasure, not as long as those are the conditions. Drive as safely as possible, whatever that takes, focus on safety so you can get to your destination and have pleasure there!

The reason you feel stress of driving because of the fear you have in your mind? For example, fear of accident or someone will hit you…etc. Try to focus your attention to the road and ignore your surrounding and see if that could help.
