Hi All,
I have been going back and forth about this for awhile. I am considering not applying to my graduate program for spring semester. There are a couple of reasons why. First being that i didnt do so well on the exam for grad school, second, i dont feel like staying in my hometown, third, nothing about this particular program interests me. The reason im so hesitant is because chances are much better in spring to be admitted and i have no idea whether or not i will be accepted into a fall program. I also really want to leave, but the thought of leaving also frightens me. I have friends here, i love california, i just feel that i need to “experience” and grow more and i don’t know how well i’ll be able to do that staying where ‘i’m at. I have no control over what will happen with acceptances into programs and that is probably where this is coming from.any advice?
insight?
ThanksSeptember 1, 2013 at 3:40 pm #41541AndrewParticipantHi Secret,
It sounds to me like you want to grow more and that you need to leave to do that. California sounds like a very safe space for you and yet your energy on entering this program seems pretty low.
What’s holding you back? Fear.. of?

What if you didn’t apply? What would you do with your time? Visualise what experiences you might have, explore those ideas, and allow yourself to imagine it.
What if you did apply, and then got a place? How would that feel? Are your doubts coming from a fear of not being accepted for the program?
What if you didn’t apply, and spent a year travelling or exploring or growing, and then decided you wanted to go to graduate school after all? Would that be so terrible? Might your experiences during that time be incredibly valuable, and make you a more mature, more grounded, more rounded person? Might they even increase the chances of you getting into graduate school or your eventual chosen career? Because you’re more mature, and you KNOW that’s what you want to do?
I have a question for you to answer here too, if you don’t mind, because I think it’s relevant to any advice you might get:
How essential is it, for the future that you ultimately want, that you do this graduate program? Especially if it doesn’t interest you?

Totally agree with Liz. When you ask yourself “what if” remember to really feel your body’s reactions to either choice. I’ve come to learn that my body’s feelings about something are far more intelligent than my thoughts about it.
Also I’ve learnt a lot more about myself and life by traveling then I ever did in university.
And lastly, and possibly most importantly, I encourage you to follow your bliss. Do what feels good.

Sometimes you need to break from that comfort zone and venture out into the unknown, let your fear guide you and that will motivate you. Don’t think with your head think with your emotions, don’t think what is right feel what it right.

Thanks Everyone!
Keep it coming
