Mangesh ParadkarParticipant
A few observations
It seems the attachment to your family is troubling you. Else why would you want to letgo of your attachment. You say that you know that the love of your family is circumstantial. If you would have really known you would have long lost your attachment. But since you havent, this circumstantial love only seems to be your rationalisation. You also say that monks are not attached to anything. Take away their spiritual life and you will see how much they are attached to that way of life.
And why you have chosen only family for attachment. Why not give up attachment to everything. Why cant you give up your attachment to your thoughts, your feelings and your own self. Because that too may not be real.
Mangesh ParadkarParticipantCan you see that the one which you call ‘myself’ is full of contradictions. Its not just your self. Everybody’s self is that way.
We like certain things about our Self and we do not like other things about our self.
So in this situation can you see the futility of loving your Self. Its impossible. One cannot love oneself all the time. That is because what we call our Self comes from the outside. This self is made of all the opinions that you have gathered and labelled it as you since the time you came into this world. These opinions would have been either good or bad. But these were just opinions. And opinions are never real.
Hence whatever you feel about yourself is the collective opinion of all the experiences you have had in life.
But is this the real you? Have you ever questioned that?
You are not the self which you think to be. So start your search of the real you which is underneath this mind, the thoughts, the feelings.
Finding out the real you is possible if you start looking.
Only then a complete change is possible
Mangesh ParadkarParticipantThe poem is asking us to surrender. Surrender to what? The What is whatever comes in the consciousness. It also mentions that it is a sublime game of chess. With God.
It talks of the two stages. One is the oridinary human being who does not surrender and is waiting for the thousand moves. These thousand moves will make him suffer so much that finally he will be ready for surrender.
So the poem is describing the need to surrender. However the Saint doesnt seem to be the ‘Realised one’. He is still a seeker. Else he would not say I surrender. Or he would not think that this is a game of chess with God. For him the God is still the Other. And God is still an opponent.
The poem doesnt describe the third state. The one where one does not even surrender. Because there is no other. So whom to surrender.
Mangesh ParadkarParticipantYour question has two parts. Belief and God.
Lets take belief. Believing means we do not know for a fact. Thats why i need to believe. Else what is the need to believe. For e.g there is Sun rise and we all see it shining daily. So you will not say i believe there is a Sun. So is belief the truth? It cant be. For truth has to be universal. So your question should not be about belief in God. Some may say they believe. Some may say they dont. But both will be beliefs which is not the truth. They have not yet found out.
Now you may say that it means everything has to be proven. Like Science. And hence only what science says can be true. Because scientific laws apply to everyone and they dont deviate. But science only deals in matter. That which is tangible. So only science cannot be an answer.
In any experience there is outside and the inside. What you experience is related to outside. But what you are is the inside. Science does not deal with the inside. The inside can be only known by you. It cannot be measured by science.
So my suggestion would be that you need to find out for yourself. If i tell you there is God, its not going to help you. Because you will again take this for face value and make a belief out of it. And the same thing will happen if i tell you that there isnt any God.
But what i can tell you for certain is that it can be found out. For that you need to know who you are? You need to know your own Self. Only then can you find out the truth about God.
