Dear Shirley:
As to the last questions of wilderness survival, here they are (I will not take more questions that I have to ask someone else for the answers, so these are the last ones on the topic):
1. What are the best techniques to use including a map and compass when out in nature so you don’t get lost?
Keep track of your time and be aware of your surroundings. If you are on a trail by a stream, you can always follow the stream back out. In other words, be aware of where you started in your hiking.
2. What is the best communication device to have on you if you need to call for help?
Cell phone is primary, but remember that you may not have signals everywhere.
3. What are some good techniques to use to signal for distress or okay?
Smoke works; a metal mirror for signaling is helpful; they make a chemical light sticks that are useful to carry.
4. What is the simplest shelter to build?
The simplest is to carry an emergency mylar blanket: they are light, require no set up and they will keep you warm and dry. They cost about $3.
