    Hi everyone,

I’m hoping someone can help. Although this may seem trivial to some, I have a real problem that eats away at me every day.

    I don’t have a career.

Just to give you a bit of context to my situation, I’m a 33 year old woman and I live in London. I spent a solid part of my 20’s living at my parents home, writing a book that I had idyllic dreams of getting published. The book was about my past experiences in a traumatic relationship, infidelity, travelling and coming of age. It took 7 years to complete.

After receiving an unconstructive critique from my editor, I decided to step away from writing for a while. My book was also proving to be very triggering for me, so after discussing this with a therapist, I was advised to seek more counselling before returning to it.

So here I am, seven years later, not writing, unsure as where to take my life. I have a art history degree, but haven’t utilised it. I truly believe I spent so much time on my book, that I wasn’t paying attention to what I really wanted to do with my life or made a plan. I feel listless and frustrated with myself now, stuck in a low paying, menial job I loathe.

I like to think I’m pretty sharp as people compliment me on being very witty. I’m driven, liked socially, have good communication skills, but have no technical skills whatsoever.

My previous work has been been in the public sector but due to cuts, I feel this is a largely an unstable career.

I’m very interested in meditation, yoga, well-being, and physical therapies. I’m willing to study as I’m not very materialistic and could save for it given my determination, but this could only be part time as I’d still have to work. I’d say I’m motivated by work satisfaction rather than money as I’ve never had that before.

I do have a bit of an entrepreneurial streak, but I’m not sure how I could merge this with my interests. Can anyone help guide me or give me some advice? This issue plays a big part of me being unhappy as I don’t have a sense of worth or purpose.

    Thank you so much

    Dear Kristen:

You mentioned traveling, writing about traveling in your book. I wonder if a career in the traveling/ tourism business (so much of it in London) may interest you. Writing about traveling can be a career.

Your book, you stepped away from it because it triggered you. What is the status on that?

At 33, it is not too late to pursue a career. Lost of people start at this age and even later. I hope to read more from you.

    Hi Anita,

Thanks so much for your reply.

My book is currently on hiatus for the foreseeable. That’s fine – for now. But I know I will want to return to it soon. I think I just need to go off what feels natural.

regarding work; I guess I’m a bit concerned by my age and where I’m currently at in my life. I feel I should have done more. Salvation lies within and all that, so I guess I’ll try and listen to my intuition more.

Thanks again for reaching out x

    Hi Kristen,

Your passion for writing your book is praiseworthy. If you have spent nearly a decade on the book, it’s obvious you have a special message for us.

As it usually happens with writers, we just know we want to write, but the idea is not clear. Moreover, whatever we have in our hearts, doesn’t easily flow in words.

I should know. I had the same problem. I was writing a book (in my head) for almost 20 years. I just couldn’t bring it out into its physical form.

Then I joined up some content writing classes (you can find lots of them online like udemy.com or just join a local trainer like I did). This improved my content so that it became readable. I could convey my ideas. My book started taking shape and it became a page turner. Finally, I did an online course that was about how to write a book, how to arrange them in chapters, how to find publishers or self-publish and make it a best seller. (these online courses are quite cheap. It costs a lot less than spending years in depression feeling lost and feeling as if you have wasted your life.)

Just look at your writing style. I feel you just need a little bit of a push in the right direction. Your writing style is good. And just look at the headline. With a title like that, you are bound to attract a lot of people. Try using that as chapter headings or title for your book and see how many readers you get…

Kristen, don’t give up on your dreams. I’m sure you will find a way.

Looking forward to buying your published book very soon.
