Have you been to a vocational guidance counsellor or did you get good advice at school or college?
I can’t say I’ve found taking their tests or talking to them, particularly useful in my life. I remember my first one at high school suggested I would be “good at filing”. That was about all.
I ended up elementary school teaching which was such a shock to the system, I nearly went mad. Not used to being the centre of attention, I had some crazy notion, that behaviour management was unnecessary and kids could just take care of themselves whilst I gave erudite explanations on such things as long division. (no they weren’t erudite actually)
Ideally, I would’ve had better guidance then which said something like this “Jack, you come across as kind of shy. Maybe you’d be better suited to a low profile job like writing. Why don’t you study writing at college? Are you interested in the way people behave or even understanding yourself better? You might be suited to doing psychology at college”
That would’ve been very useful. I could’ve followed a much more productive path instead of suffering under the limelight every day in front of kids who found me boring pretty soon anyway. I didn’t have much of a passion for the elementary school curriculum either, by the way. It was mostly crap, now I think about it.
