Help, somethings wrong with me. Or at least i feel that something’s off. Ive gone through this first half of the year confused about what i feel. I know that i am stressed, because of the way I am reacting, eating excessively, panic attacks, having headaches and giddiness. But the strangest thing of all, wanting to cry but i can’t or feeling emotional and crying and then suddenly not feeling anything at all. It is as if my emotions are cut off? Not intentionally though?

I am an extremely emotional person, so having my emotions cut off so abruptly, is very strange…

Is something wrong with me? Is this normal?

Please help, I feel like I am going insane.

    Dear xlea:

You wrote that you are “feeling emotional and crying then suddenly not feeling anything at all. It is as if my emotions are cut off? Not intentionally though? … having my emotions cut off so abruptly, is very strange… Is something wrong with me? Is this normal?”

Yes, this is normal. It is part of normal human experience. When we feel something intensely, too intensely, we get overwhelmed. It is just too much for us to feel that intensely, so the brain automatically cuts off the intensity, that is, cuts off the feeling. It is similar to holding something that is hot, too hot for us to endure, automatically we drop off the item, abruptly and quickly.

It is not intentional, an instinct, something animals do (and they do not entertain intentions as humans do). So yes, it is normal.

What about your life circumstances brings about your strong emotions this year?

Thank you so much for you reply! This year I’ve been very affected by expectations and people relationships. Managing my emotions have been really hard and at the same time trying to find myself is not an easy journey either.

    Dear xlea:

You are welcome. Doing what you can to calm down and keep yourself as calm as possible will help a lot in “Managing (your) emotions”. Ways to calm down: aerobic exercise, my favorite is my daily walk of just over an hour. A few other ways: guided meditations, slow yoga, listening to calming music.

You are welcome to share about your journey to find yourself. I will be interested to read about it and about your daily challenge of managing your emotions. Will be away from the computer shortly and back in two days, July 4.
