Hey, I’m Chey and new to Tiny Buddha. I’ve been looking at the forum and love seeing how much of a supportive community this is so I’d like to share my thoughts and feelings with you all, in hope that opening up will help me, as it’s something I rarely do.

I like to see myself as a positive person, so much so that I’ve got a website dedicated to positive thinking and encouraging positive mind-sets. However, I’m the first to admit that as a human being, I’m not always positive and sometimes I get down and frustrated. I don’t know if either of these words would describe how I’m feeling now, but I’m in a place in my life where I’m kind of annoyed with myself because I know what I want to do with my life, which is a blessing, but I’m not sure how to get there. It may seem silly because I know that this is a problem that so many others have, but the issue for me, is that I’m a perfectionist (tut tut tut lol!). I’m very hardworking and when I want to do something, I feel I need to achieve it. So being in a position where I can actually visualise myself living a happier life but not knowing how I can get to that point is quite challenging for me.

My aim is to coach others, young people in particular and help them develop positive mind-sets and teach them about the importance of thinking positively and I know that God-willing, I will achieve this, but at the moment, I’m feeling confused about the steps to take to actually get there. I’m currently working part-time at a charity, which I enjoy but to be completely honest, I know I could be happier. I dream of moving out to somewhere peaceful and working for myself. However, now I’m thinking “OK, I know what I want, but how do I get there?” I have to be honest, I kind of feel like a hypocrite, because not long ago, I published a blog post about not being afraid to live the life of your dreams, sharing tips on how to take steps closer to achieving your dreams. However, I feel like I don’t take my own advice at times. It feels easy to encourage others to do things, but when it comes to doing them myself, I find myself struggling a bit.

I’d really appreciate it if anyone could share any tips on how they achieved their dreams, or if you’re in a similar position to me, I’d love it if you could share what you’re doing to take yourself steps closer to your dreams.

    Dear Chey:

I like your honest share about your struggle to take your own advice. I would like to share with you parts of a poem I like, a poem that was given to me to read by my first and only good psychotherapist. This poem means a lot to me and it has to do with dreams, and about what living is really about:

    “Hokusai Says, by Roger Keyes:

    Hokusai says Look carefully
    He says pay attention, notice
He says keep looking, stay curious
He says there is no end to seeing.

    He says…keep changing…
He says get stuck, accept it, repeat yourself
    as long as it’s interesting.

(now notice, about dreams, as in … what you want to do)

.. He says it doesn’t matter if you draw, or write books.
It doesn’t matter if you saw wood, or catch fish.
It doesn’t matter if you sit at home
and stare at the ants on your verandah or the shadows of the trees
    and grasses in your garden.

    It matters that you care.
    It matters that you feel.
    It matters that you notice.
It matters that life lives through you…

    He says don’t be afraid.
    Don’t be afraid.
Look, feel, let life take you by the hand.
    Let life live through you.”

Does this mean something to you…? Something relevant to your thread? Please do let me know.

Dear Anita, thank you so much for sharing parts of such a beautiful poem with me, it means a lot. After reading that, I’ve realised that I’ve become so focussed on achieving my dreams, that I’ve forgotten the value of my journey. I’ve realised that I need to appreciate every moment of my journey as that’s what’s important. The fact that I’ll be helping others along the way, is what’s crucial for me to remember. Life’s precious and I need to always remind myself to live in the moment and appreciate the fact that I’m able to live and experience the process of moving towards my dreams. It’s also encouraged me to look back and realise how far I’ve actually come instead of always looking to the future.

Thank you again for taking the time to help me out, I really appreciate it!

    Dear Chey:

Yes, it is about the journey, the present moment and the next as the destination is in some time in the future that may never be. You wrote in your original post that sometimes you get annoyed with yourself: patience and gentleness with yourself are very important in this journey of life.

I just remembered something I read, a Buddhist was asked: what is your favorite thing to do? He answered: whatever I am doing at the moment.

This is the epitome of Mindfulness, being focused on what you are doing this moment, whatever it is. I remember reading about boredom, that boredom is not possible if you are mindful, if you are focused on the present moment.

And there can be no perfection, no perfection in living in the present and in being mindful and in executing anything at all. It is also impossible to not drift to the future and the past. The brain does it and it naturally does it (the function is to learn from the past and prepare for the future)- so you drift and come back to the present. Some past/ future, when there is something to learn and to prepare, and the rest of the time, gently, the best you can- in the now.
