I am posting this hoping that someone knows what I am dealing with and am seeking advice to make things better. I will get right in to the issue. Whenever someone takes an interest in spending time with me, such as asking me to go out or hang out I avoid it at all cost. At first i thought it was just a sort of social anxiety. Though I have realized the reason I turn people down, including co-workers and family, is because I don’t understand why any one would want to be around me. I also suffer with inability to complete simple tasks (laundry, changing cat litter, homework, etc.). Sometimes I can not bring myself to leave the house at all, not even to go grocery shopping because I fear interacting with people. I posted this in “Relationships” because I am not capable of making friends or keeping family close. Should I see a doctor, get medicated? I just had a baby and I need to get better for the sake of the impression I will leave on my child. Hoping this makes sense to someone. Thanks for your time

    Dear coma:

I think you should see a psychotherapist, maybe someone specializing in anxiety, a cognitive behavioral therapist (CBT) with a focus on Mindfulness. Or an otherwise competent, caring therapist. Maybe a psychiatrist for medication, short term while you attend therapy. A practice of meditation, yoga, Tai Chi… fast walking, swimming (aerobic exercise) will help.

Anxiety makes all these tasks more difficult, laundry, cleaning.. everything. And it takes away from your ability to be a good enough mother. So, yes, please do anything and everything you can to look for help to manage if not heal your anxiety.

Please post again, anytime. You can share more of your story, if you’d like: how your anxiety came about, when…?

    Hi there,

Firstly, you are not alone. Many people suffer. Secondly, you are on the way to recovery because you are here talking about it. So, we now know you are not alone and you will get better! 🙂 I hope that raises a smile. Thirdly, as said above, get some help. Mild anti-depressants will help. I’m on 10mg and I still feel pain and emotions but I have a little more clarity and it helps to focus. I also practice meditation. Nature is the best therapy so go for long walks. Write down your fears, they are often less scary when you see them on paper and it’s a great release. I’m reading the Power of Now, it’s just a few pounds from amazon. Trust me, all this will work!

Stay positive, you are amazing. Life is short. Embrace it xx

Coma, you mentioned you just had a baby, did the symptoms you describe start then? It may be related to (Disclaimer: I’m not a doctor) postpartum depression/anxiety, which is quite common. Like previous posters said above, absolutely consult a professional right away! There’s no shame in asking for help.

Also, if you haven’t already, let friends and family know you’re just going through a tough time and need some space. I’m sure they’re worried about you! When you’re up to it, and ready to see them, don’t be shy in saying, “hey, I can’t do (insert activity name here), but I’d love to schedule a phone date (or whatever you’re comfortable doing). Depending on how close you are with them, I bet they’d be willing to help with housework, bring you a meal, or watch your newborn while you get caught up on stuff.

Sending much love and light your way!
