I get agitated when I talk to my parents on the phone. We have a long distance relationship. My mom also always seems to ask me the same questions, whether it be about “what’s for dinner” or repetitively asking about issues. I feel like they are not listening sometimes and that the topics are so repetitive. Does anyone have any tips on how to be more patient in these situations? I often get off the phone feeling frustrated and upset with myself for getting perturbed with them. My husband says that the agitation starts with my Mom, and then I tend to take it out on my Dad. I do not want to continue this cycle.

    Dear J:

My suggestion is that you consider not “how to be more patient” with your mother but that you limit or eliminate the situations with her that distress you. In other words, do not stay on the phone with her long or don’t get on the phone with her at all.

It is very, very difficult to be patient when angry, and we can’t help but feel anger when we don’t want to be in someone’s presence but feel like we-have-to.

    Maybe we don’t have to…

Kimlili- your post caught my attention and I saw that no one has replied to you yet. I would like to help.

You write “I make a lot of mistakes behind them and they hated me for what I was doing.” Does this mean you did something they do not approve?
