Hello,
I have recently been diagnosed with PTSD. I am doing everything I need to do to work on this issue. Have you been through this before and what suggestions do you have to work on stopping intrusive thoughts? I know I shouldn’t be thinking about the bad stuff but I just need some words of encouragement and some skill ideas on what to do when those thoughts start arising. It’s starting to impact my work and overall life satisfaction. Thanks for any ideas that have worked for you…

I too have been diagnosed with PTSD. Suggestions are EMDR therapy (really helped me) because it allowed for the reprocessing of memories with different feelings attached to them. So, it allows the thoughts to occur but I don’t have the same intense feelings that I had about the memories/thoughts when they do happen. I’ve learned that the thoughts will occur, but I don’t have to resist them or the feelings that they bring up. Unless those feelings are extremely self-destructive, which is when I will start reaching out to my support network. Luckily, that hasn’t happened for months now after beginning the therapy.
In the meantime, there are plenty of things to do. Hobbies, anything that brings you joy. For me– that’s crochet, painting, walking/hiking, yoga, and talking with people. If I’m stuck in my office, I have some coloring books to take a break with. Treat yourself like you would treat the very best friend you’ve ever had. Kristin Neff’s self compassion meditations (google them)– really helpful for working with difficult feelings as well.
I am sending you many hugs and positive thoughts today. Please keep us updated on your progress.

Among other diagnoses, I was also diagnosed at one time with PTSD. I would say “Complex PTSD” fits me best, if I am looking for a diagnosis more correct. Last I know, Complex PTSD, or CPTSD is not yet an official diagnosis but has been proposed.
I was also diagnosed with OCD, so I am familiar with the concept of “intrusive thoughts.”
You may have already shared here, but did you or do you attend competent psychotherapy?
This was the beginning of my healing: my first experience with a competent, caring, hard working and dedicated psychotherapist. My therapy with him started five years ago. What was useful and helpful in regard to symptoms of PTSD and OCD is learning the skill of Mindfulness, relaxation/ soothing oneself in non destructive ways, physical exercise, slow yoga, Tai Chi, guided meditation, unguided meditation… as well as insight into the past.
Share more, if you would like, about your trauma or traumas, in small portions, as you feel comfortable. Very useful for me was understanding that I need not be overwhelmed and when I feel overwhelmed, that is too scared, I need to stop what it is I am doing and calm myself. This is why this healing process takes so much time and why you need to be patient and gentle with yourself. No matter how patient you think you are, you need to be more patient and then some more.
Please let me know if any of this is new to you or if there is something new about it as you ponder it now… your psychotherapy situation… I will reply to you every time you post (unless you let me know you don’t want me to, of course!)

Soon will be starting mindfulness/relaxation class as well.It was just a rough day and I keep waking early with these thoughts. I know I need to get up and do something but I am physically exhausted from not resting enough. Taking it one day at a time and often just one hour at a time. Here’s hoping for a peaceful Friday.
