Have been practicing Buddhism for a little under a year and everything in this situation tells me to let it go. However, my partner and myself feel intruded upon. It feels slightly unsafe and as though this will continue to happen and possibly escalate. In terms of letting the things go (some outdoor cookware, and a rear view mirror on my car), I really don’t feel attached to the items and sincerely believe that someone probably needed it more than I did. But I am trying to be mindful of the fact that this is the second time within a four month span and that it is disconcerting to both my partner and myself.

What do we suggest in this situation? Do I obtain surveillance? Do I reach out to police? Do I move? What are your thoughts? My instinct is to move. I’ve lived in this area growing up (kind of in the meeting point of the suburbs/ghetto) and it was filled with traumatic experiences which make intrusions like these more palpable.

    Hi drinkmorewater,

Sometimes the solutions are simple. For your backyard I would put in a motion sensor sprinkler system. They have it for the deer, but you can have them for the humans! For your house, get a young dark protective German Shepherd (dark for its teeth to stand out more LOL). For your car, put on some bumper stickers that will make them think twice (think biker, gun enthusiast, patriot, MMA fighter). For your front door put some mud encrusted size 13 work boots with a note on the door that says “Uncle Paulie, don’t let the pitt bulls out again, Merle is going to the skeet shoot and will be back in fifteen.”

    They worked for me!

    Best,

    Dear drinkmorewater:

I would move if I was you because the place you live is “filled with traumatic experiences”, memories of traumatic experiences from your childhood. Even though memories are not tangible, they have power and if possible, why not remove some of the power of traumatic memories. A fresh start somewhere else makes sense to me.
