    Hey all

Was wondering if you have any advice on this, please! Have been with my partner for a while now, but am kind of as to a loss as where to go from here. He just won’t open up about anything to do with his past at all. He has clearly been heartbroken in the past, and when I try to discuss this further he just shuts down and tells me it’s nothing to do with me. I know he is still in contact with his ex (but refers to her as his friend, but I know it is her when he mentions in conversation) and it has been consuming quite a lot of my brain space as I now genuinely just feel like second best as he clearly finds it too painful to speak about. Our relationship just doesn’t feel like it’s progressing any further now because this is always in the back of my mind. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks so much!

    Dear londongirl:

You referred to this man as your partner: “my partner”. If he doesn’t share with you anything at all about his past, and if he doesn’t share his friends with you, that is, if he meets his ex girlfriend, now friend but does not suggest that the two of you meet with her together, then the partnership between the two of you is very limited.

I want to understand better, therefore I ask: did you share your past and friends with him, and what is otherwise the nature of the partnership?
