    Balance – 1) an even distribution of weight enabling someone or something to remain upright and steady.

    2) a condition in which different elements are equal or in the correct proportions.

    3) a counteracting weight or force.

    It is a cliché to say life requires balance, and yet, you who read this, I who write this, we both find ourselves tipping the scale of our lives. We follow the practices of our faith: Christianity in the duality between Good and Evil, Buddhism in the Four Noble Truths, and all the rest (I cut short in fear of digression). We watch videos, read books, post articles (such as this) reminding us that balance is key to our survival; the working soul must rest to produce and produce to rest. Where have you and I gone wrong? A bold assumption, but I feel confident in stating that somewhere along our path, the rocks of our past have weighed the left, and we fill the rocks of the right with new memories to keep ourselves firm.

    But never let either go. Never let the past overcome, and never let the new take away. 1,2,3: You remain upright and steady when there are different elements equal in proportion counteracting each other in weight and force.

    You will never know love until you experience hate; you will never know peace until you experience chaos; you will never know joy until you experience sadness; you will never know bravery until you experience fear; you will never know praise until you experience mockery; you will never know confidence until you experience doubt; you will never know life until you experience death.

    This is a simple reminder if you are currently going through a storm, one that is brutal but will eventually pass. And if your waters seem steady, continue living a life prepared to weather the harshest as the scale will always find its balance.

    I wonder if Balance is not the freedom from fear or desire but the ability to hold the tension of freedom and desire without attachment, And so we dance.

    Dance the art of falling and catching ourselves gracefully. Dancing from the still point

    “At the still point of the turning world. Neither flesh nor fleshless;
    Neither from nor towards; at the still point, there the dance is,
    But neither arrest nor movement. And do not call it fixity,
    Where past and future are gathered. Neither movement from nor towards,
    Neither ascent nor decline. Except for the point, the still point,
    There would be no dance, and there is only the dance.” TS Eliot

    “The ability to hold the tension of freedom and desire without attachment”—what a beautiful response, Peter. Reminds of the edge, oh that wonderful edge to experience the Balance, like a ropewalker crossing a flimsy, thin piece of thread while the world watches, waiting for you to pass or fall, a choice always yours, a choice for you to dance as Eliot says at the still point of the turning world.
