I wasn’t exactly sure where to put this question so I just decided that this was the best place to put it. Is there a difference between who you are and the people who inspire you? If you’re generally a quiet, self-conscious girl who idolizes a girl who is free, wild and confident, does that mean that that kind of girl is inside of you waiting to come out? When you find yourself, can you pick up traits you admire from other people?

Hello Helen.. thankyou for putting up this beautiful question…
i myself think on this manyatimes..and i can say to some extent ..got someclarity.. so wants to share with you…
Helen we all are every minute changing.. a new thought in our mind..n we r no more the same… any incidence which doesnt change us physically or emotionally…still has power to change us subconciously… say e.g. u told… a quiet self concious girl can idolize a free wild confident girl… reason can be motivation from that outside source or one’s willingness to step out of one’s life style… change is always ..always for betterment… the moment we like something…we either wants it to be der so that it can make us feel good,(as we can easily relate to things that makes us feel gud)…or we begin to change bit by bit to be like that something..say a smiling person we met in d train..we saw him greeting everyone..,even strangers…and kind to children..compassionate for wk n old.. dont we feel good..and silently promie that i will also be like to be like him/her… its not because we want to be like someone…but because we all strive for goodness…peace..and we all wants to love and be loved…. so to do so..we keep changing..an introvert would not remain so forever in his/her lifetime…similarly a chatterbox might change to a serene personlality…we all change..grow…and make ourselves better each day…knwingly..or unknwngly… so no barriers in improvements..and no barriers to change…. 🙂
    God Bless..

    Helen,

Buddha taught that there really isn’t an enduring self, or a nugget inside us that makes us “who we are”. Instead, he taught about impermanence and change, even inside us. Some things, such as temperament, do require more effort to change, but except where biology gets involved, we are very moldable. Consider that a few things happen as you see the extrovert having fun. There is perhaps envy, appreciation, yearning, hope, awe… as we see the beauty “out there”. For me, this happens sometimes with my heroes, such as Buddha, Jesus, MLK Jr, Kermit, Moses, etc.

If we can untangle the beauty from being “out there” to the beauty being “in the appreciative joy of seeing what we’re seeing” then we naturally resonate with them and become more like them. Said differently, when we can separate the dance from the dancer, we can see its not “their” dance, its just a dance. Thats when we can use what pieces fit our own song, resonate against our own desires and inspiration, and use the steps we’ve learned. MLK, for instance, was resolute with compassion and dedication as he worked for equality. Perhaps we don’t feel called to dispell racism in the same way (especially because the situation is different), but we can carry the same dedication to equality through the same integrity and compassion to whatever does fit our own path.

    Namaste.

    With warmth,
    Matt
