    hey guys!

I’ve been thinking about how I relate to people has changed. A couple of years ago, I trusted everybody in a general way and there were a few people I trusted implicitly. Now I find my self thinking and acting along the lines that people act in a way that is beneficial to them, irrespective of consequence to others. Therefore, while I am still willing to help/give, I have stopped relying on people as their benefit and my benefit may be at odds often, and conciously or subconciously people (including me) always act to their (and my) benefit . While I feel a lot less naive, I also feel very lonely because of this thought process.

What is a reasonable amount to trust someone do you guys think? And who earns your trust and to what extent?

    Best,

    m

    Dear greenshade:

I like your thought process expressed in this thread.

My answer to your question: “Who earns your trust and to what extent”-

I will get to know a person over time, observe and learn their functioning in different areas. Following that, and upon ongoing observations and learning, I will trust an individual in some areas but not in others. For example, person X taught me that he keeps his word, is honest and caring, but is unassertive in the work place/ financially. So, I will trust X as a friend, but not as a financial/ business partner.

As to your question: “What is a reasonable amount to trust someone do you guys think?” you mean “a reasonable amount” of time, correct?- as long as it takes. I will not trust a person in any particular area until I learn if the person is trustworthy (worthy of my trust) in that area. If I need to learn quicker, for practical purposes, I will speed up the learning process by asking more questions.

Hi Anita thanks for your answer it was helpful! I like the idea of trusting people in certain areas and not others. It helps me avoid the trap of  black or white thinking, which I think I was falling into.

    best,

    M

    Hi Anita,

The idea of trusting people in certain areas is great !! This is way optimistic.

We must be conscious of the situations and stop expecting from people atleast to certain extent.
