I came up with another question while meditating this weekend .. How does Karma work ? I mean really work, is it just a consolation we give ourselves towards people who have wronged us ? I was betrayed recently, and till now thought my ex has garnered her karma and she has to deal with it now.. however, what had i done wrong or who did i wronged that this happened and caused so much pain to me ? I looked back hard but couldnt find any deed worthy of so much suffering.. has someone seen it work? how about karma from the past life ? any thoughts?
October 20, 2013 at 7:19 pm #44058Sapnap3ParticipantFunny…I was just thinking about this. I see people I know who are dishonest and deceitful and they get everything they want. They never get “pay back” for their lies but me on the other hand…one bad thing and I get the pay back with 10x more punch. I wonder about karma too. Why do some people get it sooner and earlier than others?
October 21, 2013 at 1:19 pm #44084siaParticipanthi bodhisatva and sapnap3, i think about this too…not only me, many of my friends and family members think of this….
@bodhisatva, when we get hurt in any relationship/ acquintance, it does not always mean that we did something bad to deserve such people….. people/ things happen to us so that we learn what we are supposed to learn and become a better person/ move towards our destiny… human brain is so programmed that always, our brain understands, correlates and then registers things and their consequences in our minds for recall later in time… thats how we become what we are and why we do things the way we do… life is a learning experience, each moment that happens teaches something..may be those people came to u to teach u something… learn it and be grateful….u can choose to let go with grace… and be prepared for the next happening..@Sapnap3, i think we do not know exactly whether others are getting everything what they want… for example, as i m not that person, i may not have a clue about what he/she very badly and desperately want in life… let alone whether they are getting it or not… but, mean and dishonest people, i have seen – can PRETEND that they have it all… just to fool others….
andabout getting the punch sooner and earlier(you can add other words like stronger/ harder too), i experienced the same thing.. soo many times… so, i made up two hypotheses (to satisfy my own whining about it).. 1) may be i am more spiritually inclined than others, so i observe/ watch for it and always find my own deeds being redone to me.. also, i must say there is this apprehension/ guilt that i keep watching for the next bad thing to happen to me when i mess up… 2)may be God really really loves me more that he never even blinks while watching me… every action that i make – good/ bad, always has a reaction – equal and opposite/not..:)recently i also noticed that rather than what happens to others, and what others do to us, what we do to ourselves matters most….(i dont know whether this even makes any sense)
good luck to both of you inquistives… have a bright, sunny, nice day..October 21, 2013 at 3:07 pm #44088MattParticipantFriends,
There is a misconception about the nature of karma, that it is some sort of cosmic scale that dictates luck and fortune. This is not the case. Karma isn’t like that, the cause and effect are one and the same. Selfish action, for instance, is a cycle of greed and resentment. When we act selfishly, we implant in our mind a sense of conditional happiness which fades quickly. As we get our way more and more, we develop a tolerance, and over time have to use more and more of our energy to fill the lack happiness. The karma isn’t “we fall flat and feel pain” but rather we stagnate into materialism, and miss out on the cocreative, unconditional joy that can exist with or without getting our way. The result makes us resentful of the happiness of others, as a hungry man seeing others eat and thinking “who did they screw to get that meal, I wonder”. In the absence of the cycle, we have a stability that let’s us see a lovely being enjoying a meal, even if we are hungry ourselves.
With respect, isnt good for us to wish misfortune on others, hoping they “get what’s coming”. That is just anger and jealousy, and is how their patterns spread suffering to ours. Its far better to wish the greedy genuine nourishment, that they find and awaken to joy. After all, they are our brothers and sisters, and are just trying to find food in the way they know how. If you’ve ever given a gift from unconditional love, you know how much more satisfying it is than a new toy or sparkly thing. They often miss out on that, jumping from tainted fruit to tainted fruit, and deserve our compassion. Namaste.
With warmth,
MattOctober 21, 2013 at 3:33 pm #44098bodhisatvaParticipantMatt ! thank you for putting it in such beautiful words. I was thinking this all day myself, may be i am going down the wrong path by wishing bad karma on her and him, maybe i should try to forgive and hope they wake up to the calling of their conscience soon.. however, my mind chatters, often for long periods of time and aggravates me, putting me into the same pattern as they are.. I ll be more mindful of that and practice breathing when it happens. hope this helps you too sapna !
October 21, 2013 at 8:48 pm #44125Sapnap3ParticipantIt does …very much. thank you Bodhisatva for posting this. Thank you Sia for saying what you did because i do think that i am god’s special child. Many time, i forget how much i am loved by this universe.
Matt, once again i am amazed by the clarity of your thoughts. i hope to get there with daily meditation. I am watching myself better but get sad many many times a day. I will get there one day. its a work in progress. 🙂
