I have a frustrating mental habit: whenever I need to think hard, I automatically shift my attention toward my breathing. I developed this habit because focusing on my breathing made me feel more aware and in control of my thoughts. Over time, the association between needing to think hard and focusing on breathing became automatic.

I’ve since realized that this way of thinking isn’t particularly effective, so I’d like to break the habit and learn to think differently.

One common recommendation is to notice when you’re about to perform a habit and do something else instead. However, during rapid thinking, I shift attention to my breathing so quickly that I don’t even notice until afterward.

How can I weaken an automatic mental habit if it happens too quickly to catch? Has anyone successfully overcome something similar?

    Hello Kevin 🙂

It’s as if the habit has taken a life of its own, independent from your ability to choose. At first, you chose to focus on your breathing, but now, you can’t unchoose it.

I wonder if the concept of Radical Acceptance can be useful to you: to totally, completely accept what you can not change. To no longer resist what will not respond to your choosing.

It makes me think of my tics (Tourette’s). For so very long I chose to no longer tic, tried hard, but it was futile. In fact, I think that trying to not tic, made them more intense and more frequent.

Interestingly, it never ocurred to me to apply Radical Acceptance to my own tics until just now, while answering your thread.

    * Tics are automatic neurochemical habits.. but so is the automatic focusing on breathing.

    What do you think, Kevin?
