One Thursday I decided to go for a morning walk…i was bored and so I got ready and when I got out of the house I saw a man,he was going through our neighbors’ trash.
At first I thought he must be mentally ill but as I got closer I realized what this man was doing,he was looking for leftovers..any edible thing that he could eat..i saw him picking out nuts from the neighbors’ trash..he smiled when he found the nuts..my heart broke as I stood there unable to move..i stared at him and he didn’t even seem to notice me..luckily I had some money which wasn’t alot but I gave him..it was barely enough but the look on this man’s face was priceless..I’ve never seen anyone look so happy for what many people would consider pocket change…
he thanked me and kept doing so even after I left.
This morning I met the man again…going through out trash this time..i decided that I was going to talk to him and I did…he lives very far and comes every Thursday..(that is when we take out the trash)..he comes to look for leftovers to take back to his family we talked and talked and the more we talked the more I felt so guilty and ungrateful..
this man has nothing but the way he smiles when he gets what we throw away is the biggest smile that I have ever seen…
it got me thinking..
sometimes I am so caught up in trying to focus on what I don’t have that I forget the little things that’s been given to me…i am not homeless,I have food to eat every single day and every basic need to keep me alive..thinking like that made me feel grateful.it made me smile and i think sometimes all we need to do is focus on the smallest things we have to be happy..
