10 Tips to Overcome Negative Thoughts: Positive Thinking Made Easy

Even though I’m a yoga teacher, I still find it’s easy to fall prey to negative thinking. Having negative thoughts play out like a movie can only bring you pain, something that I’ve experienced many times throughout my life.

Negative thoughts drain you of energy and keep you from being in the present moment. The more you give in to your negative thoughts, the stronger they become. I like the imagery of a small ball rolling along the ground, and as it rolls, it becomes bigger and faster.

That’s what one small negative thought can turn into: a huge, speeding ball of ugliness. On the contrary, a small positive thought can have the same effect blossoming into a beautiful outcome.

I’d like to share with you an example of how one small thought can turn into a very negative experience.

I have lived on my own for the last ten years. Obviously, during this time I’ve grown accustomed to living in a particular way; I have my routines with cooking, cleaning, and living happily in my place.

My boyfriend of two years, who I have had a long distance relationship with, will soon be moving here and we will be living together. Lately I’ve had negative thoughts of moving in with him knowing that my living routine will have to change and we will have to create a new routine together.

Unfortunately, I’ve already jumped into the future and have had thoughts that we will not be able to come up with a living arrangement that will make us both happy. In my mind I have seen myself already getting angry about our cooking and cleaning situation.

He came for a surprise visit this past weekend, and boy, was it a surprise for him. We had a miserable weekend together.

I did not enjoy his company because I was already angry with him, and he was confused and equally frustrated with me. What could have been a really fabulous weekend ended up being a painful and heavy weekend.

When we start to have negative thoughts, it’s hard to stop them. And it’s much easier said than done to shift your focus to positive thoughts. But it’s the only way, especially if you want to avoid going down a path that is painful and unnecessary.

Here are ten things I did to help overcome my negative thoughts that you can also try:

1. Meditate or do yoga.

One of the first things I did was head to a yoga class. It took my focus away from my thoughts and brought my attention to my breath. Yoga is also very relaxing, which helped ease my mind. Yoga helped me stay present to my experience so instead of jumping to what could happen, it brought me back to the now—the only moment, the most important moment.

2. Smile.

I didn’t do much of this during the weekend, so I literally had to bring myself in front of a mirror and force myself to smile. It really does help change your mood and relieve stress. I also felt lighter because it takes fewer muscles to smile than to frown.

3. Surround yourself with positive people.

I called a friend who I knew could give me constructive yet loving feedback. When you’re stuck in a negative spiral, talk to people who can put things into perspective and won’t feed your negative thinking.

4. Change the tone of your thoughts from negative to positive.

For example, instead of thinking, “We are going to have a hard time adjusting to our living situation,” think, “We will face some challenges in our living situation, but we will come up with solutions that we will both be happy with.”

5. Don’t play the victim. You create your life—take responsibility.

The way I was thinking and acting, you would think I was stuck. Even if our living situation becomes unbearable, there is always a way out. I will always have the choice to make change happen, if need be.

6. Help someone.

Take the focus away from you and do something nice for another person. I decided to make a tray of food and donate it to the Salvation Army. It took my mind off of things and I felt better for helping someone else.

7. Remember that no one is perfect and let yourself move forward.

It’s easy to dwell on your mistakes. I felt terrible that I acted this way and that I wasted our weekend. The only thing I can do now is learn from my mistakes and move forward. I definitely don’t want to have a weekend like that again.

8. Sing.

I don’t remember lyrics very well and it’s probably the reason that I don’t enjoy singing, but every time I do sing I always feel better. When we sing, we show our feelings and this provides an amazing stress relief.

9. List five things that you are grateful for right now.

Being grateful helps appreciate what you already have. Here’s my list: my cats, health, a six-week trip to Asia, a new yoga class that I’ll be teaching, and for my mom’s biopsy coming out clean.

10. Read positive quotes.

I like to place Post-It notes with positive quotes on my computer, fridge door, and mirror as reminders to stay positive. Also, I’d like to share with you a quote by an unknown author that was shared in a meditation class that I attended:

Watch your thoughts, they become words.
Watch your words, they become actions.
Watch your actions, they become habits.
Watch your habits, they become your character.
Watch your character, it becomes your destiny.

    Michelle, It sounds like you may have more going on than you realize. Some negative thoughts about your fear of harmoniously navigating a new routine together probably wouldn't cause a painful and miserable weekend. I would guess you have some repressed anger you are dealing with and these ten tips, although excellent to practice daily, seem like putting a band aid on a broken leg. Just a word of caution about the possibility of undermining your feelings and reframing your “miserable experience” with something easier to deal with than the truth. I did this myself for many years and while I radiated positivity, my self-esteem suffered and it showed up in the quality of my relationships because I wasn't acknowledging my real feelings. Going deeper is a harder and messier however, the dividend is huge: living authentically.

We all have these negative habits patterns and it takes the awareness and dedication you highlight to slowly erode them away, but it's doable. Thanks for the encouragement.

  • Thanks for the list. I love number 6, “help someone.” I'm not a religious person anymore, but I love to pray for people- including strangers. I imagine them smiling and happy as I intentionally feel good. It brings joy and a sense of purpose and according to some scientific data prayer and meditation on subjects can actually change the course of events, bringing those prayers into reality.     Great advice!

    We have the ability to remove any negative thoughts whenever we want to. Most people just simply don’t understand that. Once you realize that you have complete and total control over your thoughts and actions, and I mean REALLY realize it, life suddenly becomes much more enjoyable.

    Here’s a good article that I read on how to help overcome negativity and sadness PHYSICALLY, it’s great advice as sometimes physical things can help us mentally, sometimes it can be hard to control our thinking.

  • Sometimes the best thing you can do is just “ACCEPT” your negative thoughts, without clinging to them or trying to run away. I don’t believe it’s possible to ever fully rid your mind of negative thoughts or emotions. But the good news is you don’t have to be overpowered by these negative thoughts or emotions. Just let them drift by…like clouds in the sky…

  • Exactly. The occasional emotional pain (like physical pain) is actually an important part of a fully functional and healthy human being. Pain is a signal we can learn from, not something we should try to push away or avoid.

    Having been labelled pessimistic at times, in  my own opinion my thoughts are not pessimistic but rather …..there are 2 sides to a coin, not everything is black or white, there are colors and I think more so, insight into a situation. When you can see or feel the possibilities you can be less pessimistic.  Happy I found this blog!

    This does not work at all for me and i have tried all these things and many more. Even depression and anxiety medication,pychs and counselling of which I have had many in tears listening to my stories.  Cbt has not worked either.

    negative thoughts should not be looked at negatively! They are telling you something about what you really want! Maybe having a boyfriend in a long-distance relationship was not right maybe you want your independance but not to live together?

    I always have negative thoughts, like when during sports class, a girl keep throwing soft ball at bee and negative thoughts just came to me that im a loser and im ugly and fat, it really hurts once someone said that you are stupid. It really felt like theor bullying be and i tried to think that their just playing a fool but hard to get the negative things out of your mind, like what happen if she doesnt want to friend me amd sutffs.

    So, I need to get something off of my chest. Its really ironic but as of 3 months ago I moved up to nyc with my fiancee but once a week I go back to my aunts and my moms house because they live together. Well when I’m in nyc I’m happy as can be, but when i’m at my aunts/moms I feel like a failure I feel as if everything I do is wrong. Now I only come back to help out my mom but still when I come back I always feel down . My aunt is always complaining about everything as well as blaming her problems on others and no matter what everything has to be her way.
    I never have time to myself , they always see me as a child and not matter what I do somethings always wrong. Most of the friends I’ve had in the area have gone off as well or the ones I thought were true were actually fake.
    So not much support there.
    So my question is how do you get away from negativity when there’s nowhere to go. Not a person around to hug, When there’s no escape except when you leave ?

We need to be first be sure about what is Positive and Negative before we start practicing it! and it has to be +ve or -ve for me and not for others.. I do not have to do or act in a way how someone else would have since that would be that person’s +ve or -ve.. so it is always internal.. 🙂

    Good article. I can agree that doing these things will change your thought process slowly from negative to positive from experience. Another good thing to add is your house. If you have a messy and disorganized house you won’t feel to good and you’ll get frustrated when you can’t find something you need. When I started to clean and organize my garage I began to feel better.

My husband has terminal cancer so I’m lucky for every second I have with him. Don’t waste time with petty differences. Start doing fun things with him and live!     True but the context is important. Positive thinking is a higher form of rationalizing the good and the bad in life. It doesn’t mean that we pretend that all is well, but rather be cognizent of reality and simply analyze it rationally. To me that is positive thinking. Of course there are things that one can hardly rationalize (victim of a crime, child’s death, etc) but for the most part our problems are more or less the same (money, job, gossip, cheating, etc.) and those we can rationalize.

    it’s hard to understand. But I have many years of holding on to bad lingering memories of dysfunctional families, friends who would rather leave me dead than help after giving them a helping hand, terrible rejection experiences with the opposite sex, and bullying due to my height. I want it to all go away. Then I delve into these evil demonic thoughts of destruction and chaos and almost get a pleasurable sensation from the possible reaction of how these scenarios would be enacted in real life.
    But I donot wish any longer to be stuck in a pessimistic mind space and create new better memories. I tend to over-analyze non-stop and no matter how much I pressure myself to stop it only grows more darker. My body has become weak, my mind is a dark scary play, and sometimes my soul sleeps on me because I have became too lost.
    I know we are told to suck up these things, but I wish for some peace with answers of true understanding. Maybe some life changing words.
    I donot know what else to do anymore, I pray and hear nothing. somebody help me!?!?

    For example most of the time people do appreciate my work but i couldn’t as may be i want it to be perfect and this is the reason i get trapped into negativity.

    For other example, there was a girl in my office and was the best looking girl. though I got some sign of her interested in me but I never reacted as I though how can she be interested in me with fat belly. Later on during my notice period she actually offered me to go on date but as I was leaving nothing happened

    on the other hand i can’t live in present as i keep on thinking about the so called glamarous life which do exist only in movies and fairytales. An excellent example is I am capable of owning a 10k car but i have my eyes on 50k car because of this i will end up not buying 10k car and regret later on that i have missed some good moments if I have bought that car.

    On the other hand I am afraid of getting married but this is the right time and I need to get married.

He said mommy and her new be got married in Arkansas in a hotel? For some reason she didn’t get married legally? She and her new boyfriend are planning to buy a house. I think the only reason they haven’t married yet is he’s got bad credit. If they get married, her credit score goes down. Why else wouldn’t they legally get it done? My son said they are getting married in October? Once again, lots of mystery to keep me guessing. I need to move on and yet I have considerable difficulty realizing who she is. What she is and what she will be. She’s a very co dependent person, low self esteem, pessimistic, why would I want this type person in my life? It’s an addiction. Especially when I get a small taste of her every two weeks picking up my son. She’s a very selfish and controlling mother to her four kids. Since she has the new boyfriend/ husband her focus has been shifted off them and onto the new boyfriend. Interesting how she did the same thing to me when we courted. She has been engaged to be married two different times since we broke it off. Who knows? I’m an old guy stuck on his ex with a small child involved. My goal is to not screw my kid up in the meantime.     I am also having this bad episodes..but the best trick,u shall first practice is, stop worrying. Just take it easy, sure it can happen again..and it is just ok..just drive slowly, and tell ur self, let it happen..i dont care!

    Life sucks so bad. It’s hard to believe any of this crap. I’ve been trying to lead a happy life and I keep getting kicked in the teeth.
