I have been dissatisfied in my work, and have been trying really hard to get a break for the past 2 years. In the same time, I have seen many friends/colleagues get better opportunities through sheer luck/serendipity than hard work or talent. A lot of people have appreciated my workethic, sincerity, hard work – but that hasn’t resulted in anything tangible for me. What good is appreciation if I don’t enjoy my current work and am just not getting the right break?

I know I am more deserving because of talent and hardwork, and I am finding it increasingly difficult to feel happy for other people. I don’t like to feel this way, but I can’t help feel jealous/envious. I feel like a failure at times, and hate myself for worrying.

I don’t particularly believe in God, but know that luck/fate plays a hand in the way things work out. But to lately realise that luck alone is all-important is impacting my basic value system. I have always thought that luck is when preparedness meets opportunity – but to always stay prepared and never get an opportunity? I have started feeling lately that sincerity, hard-work & focus don’t really matter and fate is all that drives your success.

I’m sorry, but no, you DON’T know that you are more deserving. You don’t know how much work other people have put into things. You might work longer hours, but maybe they are more efficient. Maybe they communicate their ideas better. Maybe they work in teams better. Maybe they are better leaders. Maybe luck is part of it; they met the right person at the right time who saw their potential and decided to take a chance on them. But life doesn’t OWE you anything. Deciding who “deserves” what in this life is crap.

Maybe you are dissatisfied with your work because it’s not the field for you. Maybe your bosses notice your work, but also notice that you have no spark for this work. You have no passion for it. Maybe you need to try something new. Or maybe, you need to look into new ways of viewing your job, your work, your life… because I’m going to guess that opportunities HAVE presented themselves to you but you didn’t recognize them because they weren’t exactly what you were looking for, or not neatly packaged enough for you. Maybe your friends have recognized these opportunities and jumped at them, took a risk, and it payed off in the end.

I think attitude can play a huge role in job and office dynamics. As a manager, I will hire / promote someone with a more positive, energy, upbeat, outgoing attitude over someone who is purely competent or skilled in what they do.

Why? The more positive a person is the more pleasant they are to be around. I want people on my team who not only contribute to the day to day operations of my workplace, but also make it a fun place to be. I’m not saying that skills, hard work, and experience don’t play into a factor, but I’ll be honest and transparent by saying that I rank soft / people skills and attitude equally or sometimes higher than skills and experience. I can teach people what to do, but if how and why they do the job is to have a positive impact on something greater than themselves, that I cannot teach and has to come from within.

Sure a hard worker and skilled person will get the job done, but their cynicism, dissatisfaction, jealousy, judgement, and comparison is not the kind of work environment I want to foster. There are more important things in life than what we do such as how and why we do them.

What John said should make great sense to you! It simply sounds like you are burned out and your basic survival emotions are taking over. Please, check out the following great thread for more info! 🙂 OVERCOME YOUR DEMONS
