So I have a dilemma with deciding my career path..I am going into my sophomore year of community college and plan to transport junior year. Initially, I have planned on becoming a Psychologist, as I really enjoy understanding human behavior and just working with people in general. I even have had the far reaching dream to write a book someday using the principles of Psychology. Over the past week, I have had extreme anxiety about the hard, vigorous work, time, and low financial payoff a career in Psychology may pose. I have questioned whether I am truly up for spending 10+ years in school, as I would have to get my doctorate degree and residency before I can actually begin my job. I have envisioned myself working my way up in the corporate world, being independent by making my own money, living in an apartment with a career in my 20’s, starting a family in my 30’s..however, this “vision” doesn’t exactly coordinate with my plan to become a Psychologist. I have begun looking into a career in possibly marketing or communications, as there is a better job outlook and potential for higher pay (without all the debt of student loans for getting a doctorate degree!). I know I still want to study Psychology in school, possibly double majoring or minoring in it if I chose the marketing career route.

However, I am fearful of being dissatisfied with my life if I chose an “un-fulfilling” career (in marketing or communications). I am fearful of regretting my choice for whatever my career is, be Psychology or in the corporate world. I do find most of my interest in Psychology, but I also am very interested in marketing and consumer behavior.

I want to help people, and I do care about the well-being of others, but at the same time I care for the well-being of myself (living life outside of school, traveling, volunteering time to help others, overall, experiencing life outside work and study).

How should I go about choosing my career path? Am I relying on my future career to much to offer me happiness, instead of understanding that my career doesn’t define my ultimate life satisfaction?

    Hi Amanda

    Thanks for your post.

What an interesting dilemma you face at such an young age !

If you could leave the fear out of the picture, what would you do ? Whats the worst, which can happen with either decisions ?

When I am unsure of a decision or fearful of something, I sit on the decision for a few days and I ask my inner voice for guidance. I also try and work out whats the worst that can happen with either choices. And often, the worst is nothing that bad or major.

Life is meant to move forward. Keep flowing. We never make wrong or right decisions ever. We only create. If one creation fails to achieve what we want in life, create something else. Simple.

Sending you loads of positive energy and may you get some clarity to create forward moving life for yourself.

In today’s word, it’s important to empower yourself and have all your ducks in a row. Sometimes we end up “working for the man” in order to pay the bills, and there is nothing wrong with that. However, if you’re a deep soul who desires to help others, you may find your career unfulfilling.

Do not worry – because you can use your time outside of the 9-5 to reach others –> by volunteering, starting your own project, etc

The bottom line is that you can still find fulfillment outside of your career choice:)

    Namaste!

    Hi Amanda,

Have you talked with some people in each career? If presented as informational and not a job search, you may get a 15-30 minute meeting to ask questions and get advice. Would the experience help you? Would these contacts help you later? It’s primary research. What do you think?

    Hi
I relate my self to you.. I have been stuck in similar situation too for past two years.. I also wanna help people and want career which helps me with that.I guess its only our fear which stops us but I think it is good to think rationally at times and make decision. I agree that if we really wanna help someone we can make an effort and always volunteer.
