    Hello everyone

Long story short I have a history with severe depression  but over the past two years with dedication I have managed to turn my life around a big part of this I owe to volunteering at a local animal shelter near me but it has gotten me really down recently.

I volunteer every weekend to help the animals but I have been thinking, imagine all the suffering going on for the animals I am unable to help the ones that are getting abused, sick ect when I think about all the suffering going on that I cant help I really  feel down like extremely down I wonder what the point of all of this is?

The cruelty of life and the world at large it just gets a bit much for me to take sometimes. The reason I feel strongly  about animals is that dogs and cats for example are completely at our mercy and the cruel way people treat them has got my emotions going from determined to help all the down to thinking there is little hope for us

It’s silly I think and the feeling comes and goes but when it comes it is extremely intense

    Thank you all for listening

    Dear Ross:

When you see the animals, “completely at our mercy and the cruel way people treat them”, does it trigger your own suffering when you were a child, having been completely at the mercy of the adults in your life?

Young children are helpless. They are at the mercy of their parents, the adults that are there.

    Dear Ross,

I also felt the same way you are feeling right now. Your spirit should not feel crushed because you are doing the best you can. What you can also do is create awareness through social media about why it is necessary to treat animals nicely. And I took a vow to help every animal possible by creating NGO’s for them, so you can also do it. Remember, every small step counts  and you are doing great man. Just do your best they way you are doing.

    Dear Ross,

You might be focusing too much on suffering. Certainly, humans had domesticated animals, but that doesn’t mean that animals can’t coexist with humans in peace. There are many families out there who view dogs and cats are part of their family and would grieve their passing.

So rather than the fact that animals are suffering, your mind might be too zoomed in the ‘fact’ that there is suffering. And you might be able to relieve some of their suffering, but that doesn’t mean that they stop suffering. As long as you are alive, there will always be some kind of suffering, regardless of what anyone hope for. And when people do suffer, the best thing to do is to do what you can. The suffering might pass or it might not, but when you stew in the fact that there is suffering, you stuck yourself in a loop of ‘suffering = no control over it = can’t do anything about it = depression about hopelessness = suffering’ over and over again.

So try not to focus on the suffering part, but on what you can do at the moment.

    Good luck.
