I’ve been an avid reader o TinyBudddha for a while now (months). Trying to search for solutions to my issues, but am still stuck.
I have been doing therapy for over a year now, which started because my anxiety attacks were getting out of hand. When the therapy started I unlocked a never ending well of depression and was put on medication to keep it from making my day-to-day life nonfunctional. Through this time, I think I have only gotten good at masking my depression and anxiety but still deeply suffer from it. I’ve noticed that although I form habits and rituals for myself to be mindful and create a peaceful environment for myself, it doesn’t take much to trigger me and get thrown off.
I’m only 21, still trying to finish college and really really confused on how to fix my mental block that started once I started therapy. And I hope I don’t seem like I’m blaming my therapy. I have genuinely learned a lot since I started, I just am not sure if I’m really in a better place or how to get to one.January 19, 2017 at 10:18 pm #125757Adam PParticipantHi there Manii,
Welcome and thank you for posting. Regarding the problems you are experiencing with your depression and anxiety would be instead of masking the problems, but rather face them head on. One solution to help combat your anxieties and fears would be to acknowledge them. I’m not sure if you have completed this in therapy, if not then acknowledge them. Whether it be through oral or writing them down. Have a hard and honest conversation with yourself including “WHY” statements and answering them. When you can acknowledge your fear/anxieties, it puts you in control of overpowering and conquering them. This acknowledge practice can also be applied when you feel certain triggers approaching your mental state. A simple “STOP” and process the situation helps. Over time and as weeks/months pass, you can help wean yourself off the medication and use your mind as the best kind of prescription.
Thank You and Take Care

The forming of “habits and rituals… to be mindful and create a peaceful environment” for yourself is a good beginning, but like you experienced already, it still “doesn’t take much to trigger” you-
this is because certain neuropathways in your brain, creating mental habits from long ago, were not undone because of these habits and rituals. It would take a longer time and more work, a lot of patience.
Would you like to share what you learned in therapy so far?

@anita
I have noticed that there are things that I’ve learned growing up that I’m restricted by. For instance I’ve had a standard of success hardwored into me that no matter how much I disagree with, I am still not able to unlearn it. If you have any advice no how to unlearn or undo these thinking patterns, please let me know.Also, going through therapy, I learned a lot about where my anxiety and depression was stemming from, and was able to address those matters. However, I easily get triggered on completely new issues. And the panic attacks are worse than they used to be. I’m confused as to why this has happened.

To unlearn that “standard of success” that you were taught growing up, it needs to be examined first for any truth in it, if any. To do so, will you state/ explain that standard-of-success here?
